A friend of mine actually lives on and runs an alpaca farm in Sussex.  They actually experienced a death in the family when someone fell off of one while taking it for a ride.

Yikes, sorry to hear that. I really don't know much about them, I drive past the farm here and just see them standing in the field (the reason for my joke). I thought the farm was for the fur, but I guess I was wrong.

My guess would be a recent major personal loss (death, divorce, job loss) and this is his way to cope.

So what you're saying is that Alpacas are a lot more selective than Llamas about whom they allow to "ride" them?

So what you're saying is that Alpacas are a lot more selective than Llamas about whom they allow to "ride" them?

It's amusing when we go to the farm and people refer to them as llamas. My friend gets a little testy and corrects everyone, "They're not llamas, they're Alpacas..." then she goes into a small tirade on the differences.

They are used raised for fur.  I don't know the details, but I think their fur grows back extremely fast.
