On the subject of Grant - he has been averaging 4.5 yards a carry the last 2 weeks. He still has not had the long runs he had last year but he has become a workhorse - a great powerback that just averages a good 4-5 yards per carry. I would rather have a consistent back then have one that occasionally breaks a big run. If Grant can continue his steady runs against some of the toughest run defenses in the NFL (Tennessee and Minnesota) he may be worth that contract he signed this past summer.

It is just bizarre that McCarthy chose to pound Grant when he was getting 3 - 3.5 yds per carry a few weeks back, but when Rodgers is getting killed and the run game is functioning at a fairly productive level he seems to completely back off of it.

I'm glad you guys resurrected one of my old blogs. I think Nick Collins has stayed good. Woodson apparently spent alot of time with him over the summer and taught him how to read a quarterback and make interceptions. I too am concerned at how much Nick Collins future contract will be worth now. He is suddenly worth alot more money this year - and he was just average last year.

He also seems to have a gift for taking a interception all the way back. He sais its because he used to be a running back in high school and has great field vision. Every return by Collins is looking special.

I read an interview several weeks back where the writer basically asked "how come you are playing so well now when you were so mediocre previously?" (well, not in so many words but that was the gist of it) and Collins said Charles Woodson has really shown some leadership as far as helping out the young DBs in what to look for in film study and such.

Collins sounds like he's in it for the long haul; his head has caught up to his talent. I doubt I'll forget that pass deflection against Indy - that was up there with Woodson's "Heisman int" as far as eye-popping athleticism goes.

I would love to watch clips of him last year compared to this year. He just doesn't seem to fire through the hole this year. Maybe it isn't there. Maybe the hamstring is still bothering him (doubt it). I don't think he is is relaxing after signing his contract...he doesn't seem like that type of guy.

Two more words. Yellow flag.

Penalties disrupt the chance to get into a rhythm, the opportunity for running the ball, and demoralize when a good run gets called back. (Especially annoying and demoralizing WHEN THERE WASN'T EVEN A HOLD ON THE PLAY. Guess I better let that go....)

The only thing I am worried about is Collins playing for a big contract. I hope that isn't the case, because he is looking like a difference maker in the secondary. And he is young. The future back there looks strong with him, Rouse, Bigby, Williams, and hopefully an emerging Pat Lee next year.

Not to mention our young CB's (Blackmon, Williams). If we can keep them all together, it could prove to be a strength of this team for years. BTW, isn't Lee a CB?

Ya...I was referring to the entire secondary. Forgot about Blackmon. I was starting to lose faith in him until his big return last week. His is a dangerous weapon.

Wasn't it interesting to see Blackmon respond to the embarrassing mistake he made fielding that punt way too deep? Makes me think he has an extra gear--that he's still a little tentative. If he starts letting loose he will be a heck of a weapon.

I agree. To me, even though it's two totally different situations, he's like Grant. Whenever either of them starts dancing around, I start to cringe. They need to each hit the hole fast and let the chips (but hopefully not the football) fall where they may.

I wouldn't go that far. Just because he jumped one route in a "rout" when everyone and their brother knew Kitna was throwing.

But, he appears to be playing better. Lets hope its a trend, not an abberation.

Not sure who you were referring to jumping routes, but Rouse got burned last year, and this preseason jumping routes. He makes some spectacular plays, but also gets burned trying to make some. I think the coaches looked at Collins as a little more steady right now. Yes he'll make mistakes, but so do Woodson and Harris, and so did Sharper and Butler. Collins just makes fewer of them right now than Rouse when they are looked at as a percentage of downs played.

I think next year it'll be a hell of a competition for the starting job, though. I think some more selective seasoning this year for Rouse, and the Packers end up in pretty good shape at safety for a while.
