Bad new for US Rugby. Canada pounded us 41-18. I didn't get to watch it, but it appears to have been a shellacking.

The United States had to win or lose by 5 or less to qualify for the World Cup in 2011.

The United States has one last chance to qualify with a 2 match playoff against Uruguay, with same format. 2 wins qualify, and if the series splits total points decides the qualifier.

Start saving now for 2011 World Cup. I was in New Zealand last summer. It is fantastic. The world cup will be great. Wait to you see their bacon.

Tri-Nations is coming up. All Blacks are a little down this year with injuries. it will be interesting to see if they can turn it around against Australia and South Africa. The games start at 12:30am or later here which makes it a little difficult to watch, but I've been adopted by a bunch of Kiwis so the real trouble is the next day.

All the world over, it's always the same. It's the backs what gets the glory and the forwards what gets the blame.

And rightly so.

If you knuckle draggin Neanderthals would get us some ball and get the hell out of the way, we'd win every match!

The girls? If I had a nickle for every time I was talking to a chick at 3rd half and had some big, ugly prop try to weasel in and mess things up, I'd have a couple bucks. You boys stay in the other room and let us chat 'em up. We'll give you some of the fallout.

Yeah, the Tri Nations will be great. The Kiwi's are a little down, but never count out the lads who proudly wear the Silver Fern. I've got to get to NZ, rugby heaven if there ever was one. ( I know about Wales, but you know Welshman will NEVER spring for a beer).

I played Wing, fullback, and scrum half at the end of my career for a city side in Cincy. I played for 15 years, but out 2 - 2 1/2 seasons with the accompanying injuries. I was a decent rugger, but never made a select team, or was on any "elite' side. Had a world of fun and had some great matches and got my jaw dislocated in a C game playing loosehead prop so we could have 3 matches for our fledgling C guys.

In short, I was a rugger. I enjoyed the mud, blood, beer, and broken bones that come with the ride. I loved it and still hang around the lads, tending bar at our beer booths, etc.

Who did you play for and what position?

I played loosehead with a couple of stints at the glory position of hooker. I started at UWEC in early 80s, played for Milwaukee RFC 85-89, Wisconsin Collegiate and Seniors, was training camp fodder for Midwest, whored whenever my club wasn't playing, and ended my career with OMBAC in San Diego after it was discovered I had broken my neck several years earlier. Now I'm relegated to wishing I was on the pitch and being a determined beer drinking story teller on the touchlines.

My greatest rugby moments were winning Arctic Fest with UWEC and 4 years later winning it again with basically the same team as an alumni touring team.

I kind of like the new rules and admit it would be fun to play them. However, the new rules would most likely have taken my skill set and me out of competitive rugby.

Personally, I think Hercus kicks way too much. I'm glad he made one drop goal, but on each of his attempts US forwards were moving down the field, albeit slowly. I'm against kicking when your forwards are going forward.

But a win is a win, and breaking Canada's streak of 4 in a row against us was big.

A win over Canada is a great step forward. Rugby has floundered while soccer, lacrosse and other minor sports have taken off. It's good to see our national side get a victory. 4 penalty kicks, eh?.. Back in the old days, when I played, we didn't have kickers good enouff to covert sh!t!.

it's also a great idea to have these hidden threads in plain site.

This way, the "grown-ups" can actually discuss some football!

I was lucky enough to get to vacation in New Zealand and saw the New Zealand Professional Basketball Championships. It was unique. My soon to be ex-brother in law played for Ripon and probably could have made either team competing in the Championship. But down there basketball is less popular than rugby is here.

I first saw this when the New Zealand basketball team did this before one of their basketball games I worked here in Indy for the 2002 World Basketball Championship. IMO, one of the coolest traditions in sports.

BTW...former Badger Kirk Penney was on that New Zealand team.

Well, there's a player that supports your assertion. That was the theory when the All blacks played Jonah Lomu at wing. With his size and speed, a good pass to the wing was 50-50 to be a score. I'd still say JB at inside centre, but a great athlete like him would've been an all-timer anywhere. Brown might've been a great flanker, #8, or any slot along the back line.

I believe you are correct. I think you'd find Taylor and Hornung would have been a pretty damn good centers pair. I would have liked to see Jim Brown on the wing.

I'm going to disagree with you on Jim Brown. I think you want your inside centers setting up other players. You want a guy like Jim Brown finishing either looping to the center or just taking it on the wing, but he's a finisher not a set up guy.
