I'm sure you guys don't care to here from me but trust me, you guys go home and take care of business against the lowly Pirates... probably sweep... you pick up 3 games on the Cubs and Cards, who are playing each other and this game will be forgotten. Then everyone can get back on the WS bandwagon.

You know what though. With the Cubs loosing today and the Cards about to loose, it's games like this that can make or break a season. The Brewers should be 3.5 out now. Like last year, the Cubs won by 2 games. If that happens again this year, the game today will look even bigger.

BY ITSELF this game may not be that horrible, but taken in the context of other bullpen collapses the last few weeks, it is definitely cause for alarm. Remember the Toronto game in which an 8-0 lead going into the 9th almost wasn't enough? The problems have been masked a little because the Brewers have held on to win some of those games. But, there have been too many games recently in which the Brewers have had comfortable leads but needed Torres to come on and save the game. Now, he seems to be hitting the wall. Somebody like Riske or Gagne has to step up to become a reasonably reliable "backup closer" so the Brewers can win some games without using up the whole bullpen. Otherwise this year's second half is going to look just like last year's.

Honestly, what did Yost have to do?

Look at the relievers that we have on the current roster:

Villanueva-pitched yesterday

Stetter-pitched earlier in the game

Gagne-had just finished the 8th

Torres-closer

Shouse-available, 3 RH hitters due up

Mota-available, tipping pitches/ineffective

Riske-pitched 3 straight days

Thus, I would say that Yost had 3 realistic options. He WAS NOT going to use Torres to pitch unless NEEDED, Gagne WAS NOT going to throw two innings in a row after coming back from injury, Riske was used in 3 straight day, and Stetter was used earlier. That leaves:

Villanueva

Shouse

Mota

Now realizing that Mota is tipping pitches or sucking, I would not have used him. I would've used Villanueva, although no guarantee since he was just used yesterday. Although Yost's decision to use Mota looks suspect on the surface, and Mota eventually essentially blew the game, Mota did not pitch all that horrible, I hardly consider two infield singles and a walk to be getting pummeled. I will admit that I considered this a win in the 8th inning, and losing this game COULD end up causing a slide, we still went .500 on our 10 game road trip against a tough to beat at home ATL team, a streaking Minnesota team, and a struggling Diamondbacks team. 10 game homestand. I admit I wanted to go 6-4, but 5-5 isn't a killer at all.

This loss isn't as bad as it seems. Not sure why, but it doesn't have the feeling that the one's last year did. Now, we need something like a 7-3 or 8-2 homestand to ride into the All-star break hopefully in control of the WC.

These are games that are more like triggers to the start of an extended losing streak. If the Brewers lose the Pirates series, everyone will point back to this point as to where Mota let the wheels come off.

This game was too funny. Incompetence at its finest. Simply an amazing choke job of epic proportions and another 5 run blown lead to boot. A real Brewers classic. Throwing Mota out there is basically conceding runs. Any game that throws Shouse in there with men on base these days is generally doomed to a loss. What is even more funny is that not a single bit of this was Gagne's fault, who pitched a clean inning.

Pure incompetence. Well deserved loss. Maybe Yost will trust these guys a lot less. Probably not though. The bullpen is wreched.
