Left-hander
Chris Capuano, who had a second "Tommy John" reconstructive elbow
surgery in May 2008 and has been on the comeback trail since, will
begin a rehab assignment with the rookie club in Helena this week.

Capuano has made three appearances (3 innings, 2 earned runs) with
the rookie club in the Arizona League. It has been a long comeback
trail for Capuano, who experienced some setbacks along the way, but
he's still trying. He missed all of last season and obviously, most of
this year, before returning to the mound.

I get asked about him from time to time and just thought I'd pass that along to any interested folks.

Bruce Seid chat 8/26

1pm on brewers.com

Brooks Hall signs

Brooks Hall signs for $700,000

Kentrail Davis deal probably in place

By Tom Haudricourt of the Journal Sentinel

Here's
what I'm hearing is going on with the Brewers' negotiations with
Tennessee outfielder Kentrail Davis, a supplemental first-round pick in
the June draft.

I'm hearing the Brewers already have an agreement in place with
Davis but won't announce it until tomorrow at the bequest of
MLB because other agents will use it to drive up their asking price
prior to the 11 p.m. CDT deadline for signing 2009 picks. Makes sense
to me because a lot of these late signings are going way over the
recommended slot bonuses by MLB.

I wasn't at Miller Park today but I saw that Adam McCalvy of mlb.com
reported that Davis was on the premises. He no doubt was there to
finalize his bonus and take a physical. MLB has told teams that players
must pass physicals prior to the deadline. In the past, teams were
allowed to do deals prior to the deadline and have the physicals
afterward.

Look for Davis to get way more than the $844,200 recommended for the
39th slot by MLB. He is represented by agent Scott Boras, who always
gets top dollar. Because Davis was a sophomore-eligible pick, he could
always go back into the draft next year, so he has that leverage.

It will be interesting to see what the Brewers give Davis. Their
first-round pick, Indiana right-hander Eric Arnett, received $1,197,000
as the No. 26 pick. If the Brewers give Davis more than that, how will
they explain that to Arnett? Not that Boras cares one bit about that.

A rumor surfaced a few weeks ago that the Davis family agreed to a
$1.1 million deal without Boras' consent and he nixed it. You can bet
the Brewers want the bonus to be lower than Arnett's and Boras wants it
higher.

The Brewers' fourth-round pick, prep pitcher Brooks Hall, is going
to get way more than the slot recommendation, too. MLB recommends
$198,000 for the No. 136 pick but Hall has a scholarship to South
Carolina as leverage and is holding out for big deal. I was told it
could exceed $500,000.

This is why the draft is broken. Teams are forking out all of these
huge sums for guys coming out of high school and college who haven't
even suited up as pros. In the next collective bargaining agreement,
management has to get these prices reined in. The NBA slots money for
all of its picks and that's what the player gets, like it or not. It
won't be easy to get the union to agree, however, because it doesn't
want to upset agents who also represent its members.

Prince, Brownstein, Lucroy

Our only 3 prospects that have more BB's than K's. 16th Round Pick.

Lefthanded power pitcher (plus-plus fastball with velocity and excellent movement, plus-plus curve and the makings of a solid change up).

Came into the season as one of the top arms in the SEC.
Got MOno before the season and was effected most of the season and sort of fell off the radar.

Was projected to be a pick in the first 3-4 rounds of draft, and earlier if had big season.

Most folks assumed he would go back for his senior season to improve draft status.

He is an absolute steal and do not be shocked if turns out to be the star of the college pitcher we drafted in 2009.

prospect disappointment

Anybody else disappointed in the prospects at the lower level? I know I sure am. When the Brewers lost Cordero and Linebrink to Free agency the brewers had 4 extra picks for the first time in the draft. I thought it would be pretty much 2 times the haul of a normal draft. I was pumped. Then last season the Brewers lost Sabathia and Shouse to Free agency and got 3 more extra picks. Since then I am thoroughly underwhelmed with how the picks of the past year and a half have performed. I thought the Brewers would at least have 1 gallardo type player and 1 Hardy/Gamel type player out of all the extra picks but that hasn't come to fruition yet and looking at how most are performing it is hard to see it ever coming to fruition.

I am usually upbeat but I look at players like Cutter Dykstra, Evan Frederickson, Seth Lintz, Cody Adams and even a lesser extent Jake Odorizzi, Brett Lawrie, and Eric Arnett and I can't help but feel disappointed. Last years and this years draft were prime opportunities to build this team for 4-5 years down the road and from my perspective it doesn't look as bright as it did last year at this time.

Thats just my 2 cents.

Pena and Capellan

The brewers announced a month or so ago that they had signed these two players and they would be playing in the Dominican league.
Ash said that Braddock, a former starting pitcher, has the kind of
stuff to move quickly to the big leagues. He has dealt with health
problems and emotional issues in the past, and Ash said his routine is
being “monitored closely.”

Wooten, a 13th-round pick in 2008 out of North Carolina, is more of
a command pitcher who succeeds by hitting spots. With Braddock and
Wooten moving up, reliever Omar Aguilar was sent down from Huntsville
to Brevard.

The Brewers also promoted reliever John Axford from Huntsville to
Nashville and closer Jim Henderson from low Class A Wisconsin to
Brevard. Henderson had a 1.06 ERA in 26 outings for the Timber
Rattlers, with 17 saves in 17 chances.

I'm very excited to hear that Braddock was promoted. He really deserves it. Stay healthy!

Brewers sign supplemental 1st rounder Heckathorn.

The
Brewers signed one of their two supplemental first-round draft picks,
right-handed pitcher Kyle Heckathorn. He was the 47th overall pick in
June’s draft.

The Brewers gave Heckathorn $776,000 instead of the slotted $739,000
for that spot, but Heckathorn said the "big capper" was the Brewers
inviting him to big-league spring training next year, which hadn’t been
done since the Brewers signed Rickie Weeks in 2003.

Heckathorn went 4-1 with a 3.44 ERA in 866 1/3 innings and 13 starts
at Kennesaw State last season. He was assigned to rookie-level Helena
on Monday.

"Hopefully I can get through the minors as quick as I can and get up
here and help the Brewers win a World Series," Heckathorn said. "I'll
keep my eyes and ears open and do what they instruct me to and get here
as quick as I can. That's my goal."

The Brewers have now signed 27 of their 53 drafted players, including 14 of their top 17 picks.

Brewers sign Jose Pena!

Brewers sign Dominican prospect

Chicago - I just
spoke on the telephone with Brewers scouting director Bruce Seid, who
was excited about a young outfielder named Jose Pena that he just
signed out of the Dominican Republic.

Today is the day that teams can sign international players not
eligible for the draft and Seid said he, Latin scouting director
Fernando Arango and even GM Doug Melvin had seen Pena, 16, play.

"He's really a polished kid offensively for 16," said Seid, who was
on his way back home from the Dominican. "We all liked him, and other
teams were interested in him.

"He's athletic and has some power. He's got good size, 6-3, 195, and
has a strong enough arm to be a corner outfielder. We really like his
make-up. We're really excited to get him signed."

The return of Zach Braddock

The Great Grandson of the Cinderella Man made his debut of the season Friday May 1st with 1.2 innings, 2K's, 1H, and 0 R.

Nick Green has had a nice start at AAA. 17 ip, for a 1.12 whip, over three starts, and a 4.24 era, and 12:2 k:bb ratio. A 24 year old who maybe can be 4 or 5 starter one day

Cody Scarpetta in low-A, has three starts for a 1.14 whip and a 18:4 k:bb rate over 11 innnings with a 1.59 era. What I read on google has him low 90s fastball up to 94. He is only 20 years old. In 2008 he had an era just over 2 and also struck out close to 2 an inning without many walks in rookie ball.

Efrain Nieves in low-A, a 19 year old lefty with great control and a fastball 89-90 has started really well with 12 ks and 2 bbs in 14 innings with a whip of only 1.00. Last year he fanned 66 whilst walking only 10 in 76 innins of rookie ball.

From the fielders I am sad that Gamel has so many errors in so few games. But, in fact, Escobar has MORE (8 compared to Gamel's 7). And my other two favs, Salome and Cain are batting horrid. So those four guys are the top needs for Milwaukee, and they ALL are playing not well. Gamel's bat will get somewhere (that is actually scarey good), but the idea of having top notch ss, 3rd base, catcher and CF all nearly there is not working well AT ALL. Ouch.

On the other hand, Tony Gwynn looks like he is cementing his next six year in Milwaukee as the 5th outfielder. He is slapping the ball around for a .310 average with no power, but he is walking a lot and has a .412 obp, and has six steals and is playing all the outfield positions. Heck, he may even end up in a CF platoon next year, with say Cain. But man oh man he looks like a textbook 5th outfielder, once in a while a CF start for years and years. And that is not a bad thing to have!

25 year old 2nd baseman, outfielder Irribarren has started with a .969 OPS in his last option year.

But the pick must be the number one pick, Brett Lawrie who has switched to 2nd base in Low-A and he is a .952 ops with a few stolen bases and only one error in his first 12 games.

Finally Caleb Gindl, the 20 year old outfielder in his THIRD season already has started High-A ball like his prev two years. An average over .300, enough walks and slugging to have an OPS over .900. And that is with all 5ft 9in of him. Man if he has done this as a young player in each league I guess he can keep doing it.

Mid-season call-ups

Getting to around the end of the first half of the minor league season I wanted to start to look around and see what Brewer could and should get a mid-season call up.

Basically I saw a bunch of relief pitchers over performing and thought they should get a boost in competition

At Wisconsin we have pretty much a bunch of non prospects doing very well. with the Influx of college pitchers and the relievers in BC moving up these guys could get a boost. The disclaimer is I have not seen most of these guys. I am basing it all on stats

Brandon Ritchie-22 years old lefty- 1.80 ERA, 22K's/12 BB's, 17 H's in 25 innings.

Daniel Meadows- 21 year old lefty- 3.04 ERA, 44 K's, 18BBs, 35 H in 47 Innings 16 appearances, 4 starts

Jim Henderson- 26 year old righty- 1.27 ERA, 20 Ks, 8BBs in 21 innings

Chris Dennis- 20 year old left handed right fielder- .333 avg, .393 OBP, .583 SLG, .976 OPS, 105 PA

Looking at these guys now Daniel Meadows should definitely get prospect status depending on his stuff. Brandon Ritchie looks like he could maybe help the big league club someday. Jim Henderson is just playing very old for his league.

Chris Dennis now looks very intriguing. I don't know if he has enough PA's to get bumped up but he is definitely playing well.

Brevard County

Stephan Wilson, 23 year old RH 1B,.322/.376/.442/.818

Had a decent year at WV last season

Evan Anundson- 21 Year old Right hander- 11 starts, 60 IP, 45 H, 17BB, 60 K's, 1.95 ERA

Rob Wooten-Closer out of NC- 23 year old right hander- 27 IP, 37 Ks, 11 BBs, 16 H, 1.00 ERA, 17 SVs

Brandon Rapoza-23 year old righty-.82 ERA, 22 IP, 11Ks, 2 BB, 2 H

Zach Bradock- 21 YO, Left- .96 ERA, 18.2 IP, 30 K's, 9 H, 3 BB's

Mark Rogers- 23 YO, righty- .96 ERA, 18.2 IP, 16 K's, 13 H, 11 BBs

I'll do Huntsville a bit later.

Currently the only player on Nashville I want to see up would be Iribarren but that would take a bold roster move. Swindle, Burns, Naverson, and Heether have all probably earned shots. But it would be really hard to get into the pen right now and although the infield play could improve they are probably locked in.

taylor green

Where is he at, I dont think that he went to the Tribe in the CC deal i thought the ptnl was Brantley? any update would be great.

Draft Wish List

26 -- Keyvius Sampson RHP Forest HS (FLA)

that some team preferences for specific players have begun to emerge.
This is our first opening-round projection of 2009, based on the best
information I have about each team's interest in players and about
players' expected bonus demands.

1. Washington Nationals

Stephen Strasburg, rhp, San Diego State:
I look forward to seeing which letter of "Nationals" is missing on the
jersey he holds up at the news conference to announce his signing on
Aug. 16.

2. Seattle Mariners

Dustin Ackley, 1b/cf, North Carolina:
There's still a chance they go in another direction, possibly for
pitchers Aaron Crow or Tanner Scheppers, but I'd put the chances of
them taking Ackley at around 75 percent.

[+] Enlarge
J.P. Wilson/Icon SMIUnlike workhorse Strasburg, Crow should be fresh a year removed from college baseball.

3. San Diego Padres

Aaron Crow, rhp, Fort Worth Cats:
He could easily be in their rotation a few weeks after signing, since
his arm is fresh and his stuff is big league ready. Their interest in
shortstop Grant Green appears to have faded. If they don't take Donovan Tate, he starts falling and it's unclear where he stops.

4. Pittsburgh Pirates

Bobby Borchering, 3b/1b, Bishop Verot HS, Fort Myers, Fla.:
The Pirates have been tied to a handful of high school players recently
-- including Borchering, Wil Myers and Matt Hobgood -- as potential
predraft deals, freeing up money for them to sign the top Dominican
prospect this summer, Miguel Angel Sano, who is expected to command
Michel Inoa money. Pittsburgh also has interest in the usual suspects
here, including Crow and Kyle Gibson ... but not Tanner Scheppers, who
hasn't signed the form that would allow Pittsburgh to re-select him.

5. Baltimore Orioles

Tanner Scheppers, rhp, St. Paul Saints:
The Orioles are caught a little in no-man's land -- they love a lot of
players who would be clear overdrafts at No. 5, and they're not willing
to pay the opportunity cost of passing on a huge arm like Scheppers (or
Crow, if he gets here).

6. San Francisco Giants

Tyler Matzek, lhp, Capistrano Valley HS, Mission Viejo, Calif.: The Giants seem to be leaning toward high school pitching, with Matzek, Zack Wheeler and Shelby Miller all in their mix.

7. Atlanta Braves

Zack Wheeler, rhp, East Paulding HS, Dallas, Ga.:
Atlanta takes a good Georgia high school player. I'm sure we have stock
footage we can roll out for this. Shelby Miller may be the backup plan.

8. Cincinnati Reds

Grant Green, ss, USC:
They see Green as a shortstop long-term, which is the main controversy
with this player right now among scouts. They also love Tyler Matzek
and could go that way if Matzek slides past San Francisco and Atlanta
balks at his price.

9. Detroit Tigers

Jacob Turner, rhp, Westminster Christian Academy, St. Louis:
Detroit's net is as wide as anyone's, with Wil Myers, Reymond Fuentes
and Mike Trout all high on their list. Detroit's scouting director,
David Chadd, loves big arms and has danced successfully with Scott
Boras in the past, although word is they would like to add position
player talent to their system if they can in this draft.

10. Washington Nationals

Kyle Gibson, rhp, Missouri:
He's an appropriate pick for this position who will sign for slot and
probably sign right away, giving the Nats the rest of the summer to
tangle with Boras over Strasburg. They've also looked hard at Drew
Storen, Chad Jenkins, Mike Minor, Rich Poythress, Mike Trout and Billy
Bullock, none of whom would cost over slot.

11. Colorado Rockies

Alex White, rhp, North Carolina:
They tend to favor good, athletic bats and big, polished college arms,
and since the "good, athletic bats" category is kind of empty this
year, it seems more likely they'll go arm. They do like Sacramento
State centerfielder Tim Wheeler but have a good chance to get him at 32.

12. Kansas City Royals

Wil Myers, c/3b, Wesleyan Christian, High Point, N.C.:
The Royals are on a handful of players, including Myers, Yuba City
catcher Max Stassi, Yukon High School lefty Chad James and Stanford
closer Drew Storen.

13. Oakland Athletics

Matt Hobgood, rhp, Norco HS, Norco, Calif.:
This is also probably the top end of the market for Everett Williams,
and there's some sentiment there for Mike Leake, who would be much
faster to the majors.

14. Texas Rangers

Shelby Miller, rhp, Brownwood HS, Brownwood, Texas:
They're also on Williams and Fuentes, but Nolan Ryan apparently loved
what he saw of Miller, and really, can you ever have enough arms in
Texas?

[+] Enlarge
Jesse Beals/Icon SMIASU's Leake has 128 strikeouts against just 18 walks in 2009.

15. Cleveland Indians

Mike Leake, rhp, Arizona State: I think they'll do cartwheels in Cleveland if this happens.

16. Arizona Diamondbacks

A.J. Pollock, cf, Notre Dame:
The D-backs are the harlots of the 2009 draft, because if you work the
phones, you'll learn that they are interested in every player in this
draft. Rules restrict them to one player per pick, however.

17. Arizona Diamondbacks

Tyler Skaggs, lhp, Santa Monica HS, Santa Monica, Calif.:
Fortunately for Arizona, they get to pick twice here. They're also
interested to some degree in Jiovanni Mier and Matt Davidson, and I
don't think they'd complain if Leake fell to them.

18. Florida Marlins

Rex Brothers, lhp, Lipscomb University:
Brothers and Chad James appear to be their top two realistic targets.
They're very unlikely to go bat here unless the board goes in an
unexpected direction.

19. St. Louis Cardinals

Mike Minor, lhp, Vanderbilt: They want to add a lefty and
Minor is a pretty safe if low-upside bet. The Brian Goodwin rumor seems
to have quieted down, with mixed feelings on him in the Cardinals'
scouting department. He'd be a reach here and a very expensive one.

20. Toronto Blue Jays

Kyle Heckathorn, lhp, Kennesaw State:
Unlike previous years under J.P. Ricciardi, the Jays will consider high
school arms in the first round, although they're not likely to take an
unpolished prep pitcher this high.

21. Houston Astros

Chad James, lhp, Yukon HS, Yukon, Okla.:
Their two major prep pitching signings from last year are off to good
starts in pro ball, which doesn't hurt any argument to take a guy like
James, even if he ends up signing for more than slot.

[+] Enlarge
AP Photo/Eric FrancisStanford's Drew Storen has 66 K's in 42.2 IP.

22. Minnesota Twins

Drew Storen, rhp, Stanford:
Storen could help their bullpen right away between his stuff and plus
command. They're also on California prep shortstop Jiovanni Mier.

23. Chicago White Sox

Mike Trout, of, Millville HS, Millville, NJ: They also like Indiana RHP Eric Arnett and Texas HS outfielder Everett Williams.

24. Los Angeles Angels

Billy Bullock, rhp, Florida: Bullock has a big arm but isn't
as polished as Storen. The Angels would love it if Trout fell to them
here, and if he gets past Arizona, they might just get their wish.

25. Los Angeles Angels

Reymond Fuentes, cf, Fernando Callego HS, Manati, Puerto Rico:
Fuentes is in the mix at 9, 14, maybe 16/17, and possibly at 11 as
well, but the Angels' interest is strong, and he's not likely to be
there for their next pick.

26. Milwaukee Brewers

Matt Davidson, 3b, Yucaipa HS, Yucaipa, Calif.:
Davidson should go higher than this, but questions about his position
(he may have to move to first base) have soured some clubs. It would be
a huge coup for the Brewers to get a bat like this despite picking 26th.

27. Seattle Mariners

Eric Arnett, RHP, Indiana: Jason Churchill has learned that
the Mariners are almost certainly taking college players at 27 and 33
to try to jump-start their farm system. They'd love to get A.J. Pollock
here.

28. Boston Red Sox

Max Stassi, c, Yuba City HS, Yuba City, Calif.: Stassi threw
very well last week in front of Theo Epstein, and he's always been able
to hit. He shouldn't really get this far, but the time off from
throwing (he had a slightly sore shoulder in late April/early May) made
him a little harder to cross-check. They've been linked to BC catcher
Tony Sanchez, but that sounds a bit like the "they're going to take the
local guy" theory, which isn't Boston's MO. They also like Everett
Williams and Fuentes if he should get this far.

29. New York Yankees

Matt Purke, lhp, Klein HS, Spring, Texas:
The word is the Yankees are waiting with open wallet for someone
specific to fall to them, and the most likely candidate is Purke, whose
price tag suddenly shot up earlier this month. They've got a list of
polished college players as backup plans.

30. Tampa Bay Rays

Tommy Joseph, c, Horizon HS, Scottsdale, Ariz.:
If the Rays' system is light anywhere, it's behind the plate, and
Joseph is a legitimate first-round pick considering his arm and his
power.

31. Chicago Cubs

Brett Jackson, of, University of California:
Scouting director Tim Wilken loves athletes and Jackson hasn't hurt
himself with some of his recent performances. Eric Arnett could also
fit here if he gets this far.

32. Colorado Rockies

Tim Wheeler, cf, Sacramento State: If he gets this far, it seems like a good bet the Rockies will take him, since they've at least considered him at 11.

Potential first-rounders whom I didn't project as first-rounders here include Donovan Tate, Rich Poythress, Jiovanni Mier, James Paxton, Andy Oliver, Everett Williams and Tony Sanchez. Mychal Givens
has also received some renewed interest as a shortstop, although I
still think he's a far better prospect as a pitcher because of
questions about his bat.

Jeremy Jeffress showing some consistency?

2009 Season

Team

League

W

L

ERA

G

GS

CG

SHO

SV

IP

H

R

ER

HR

BB

SO

GO/AO

AVG
