Bucks’ Jennings starts career with flourish

“‘Mike, what’s your career high?”’ said Redd, who scored 57 points against Utah back in 2006. “He was like, ‘Dang, how’d you do that?’ and I said, ‘Man, you just got to be on.”’

Two days later, Jennings put up 55 points in a win against the Warriors, becoming the youngest player in NBA history to score at least 50 in a game. The prep star who went to Europe has come home to the US and he has certainly been on for the young Bucks.

Jennings is averaging 24.8 points and has double figures in eight of nine games through Wednesday, an extraordinary start for any player in the NBA. You would think Bucks general manager John Hammond would be all smiles, but he is worried about the 20-year-old budding star.

Hammond’s concern? It may be too much, too soon, too fast for the 10th pick in this year’s draft who is a bona fide rookie of the year candidate less than a month into the season.

In this blue-collar town, the NBA plays third fiddle behind the NFL’s Green Bay Packers and the MLB’s Milwaukee Brewers, who are having their own renaissance with a playoff berth last year.

The Bucks play to sparse crowds in an arena meant for an NHL team that never came and opened before Jennings was born. If the NBA plans to stay in Milwaukee, the Bradley Center must be replaced and fans must come back to support a franchise that’s finished dead last in the Central Division every year since the most recent realignment. Its 74-year-old owner, Sen. Herb Kohl, pumps millions into the team to help keep them afloat.

To Hammond, that’s a load for any player to bear, much less a rookie.

“The pressure that all of a sudden falls on a young kid’s shoulders in his first year in the league, talking about saving a franchise or needing a new arena, that’s not fair for him this early,” Hammond said.

For his part, Jennings is used to the pressure of expectations. He left Los Angeles three years ago to go to prep powerhouse Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va., and was one of the top high school recruits. But he struggled to qualify for college and instead signed a contract with Italy’s Lottomatica Virtus Roma.

Europe wasn’t much fun for the lefty used to making playground passes and running a flashy show. Twice-daily practices and long stretches on the bench helped him mature. Even so, he began falling on draft night and it looked like he had made a bad decision, costing him thousands of dollars each time another name was called that wasn’t his.

“Everything that happened to the draft, not going to those teams that I thought were going to pick me up, I think I’m in a great situation right now,” said Jennings, who adds with a grin that his new city reminds him of Europe. “The city of Milwaukee is laid back, and that’s what I need right now.”

The Bucks signed Jennings to a two-year contract worth almost $4.5 million in July. He made an awkward splash in his new home when an expletive-laced conversation ended up on YouTube, complete with derogatory comments about the Knicks, who passed on him in the draft, and the other two point guards on the team. Jennings quickly apologized.

Now he’s staying as quiet as he can.

Jennings typically gets to the arena about four hours before game time and works with assistant coach Kelvin Sampson on his jump shot nearly every day. Bucks coach Scott Skiles, a former point guard who holds the NBA’s single-game assists record, said Jennings has a lot to learn.

To Sampson, the way Jennings is being coached says a lot more about the respect Skiles has for his new point guard.

“Scott lets him play,” Sampson said. “Whereas rookies go into situations where they get restricted because of the system. It shows you how good a coach Scott is, he’s recognized what Brandon’s good at and adjusted to him.”

Jennings has also shown surprising maturity—or restraint—off the court. He says he’s worried about a potential lockout at the end of next season, so much so that he bought a used car instead of the much more expensive SUVs that dot most NBA arena parking lots. He even likes to brag about the money he saved.

“A lot of these guys get a Mercedes or a Range Rover,” Sampson said. “A lot of guys do stuff because of status, they think they’re supposed to drive a Mercedes. He bought a Ford Edge.”

Jennings also shunned moving downtown to take part in Milwaukee’s small, but active nightlife. Instead of buying a condo overlooking Lake Michigan, he’s living in a suburb less than a mile from the team’s practice facility.

Jennings’ motivation to get better and be one of the NBA’s elite point guards took him across the country, overseas and now to the Midwest. He’s happy with his winding road, but said it isn’t for everyone. He said Europe paid off.

“My main goal is coming out here, making the playoffs, getting my teammates involved and trying to bring the winning back to Milwaukee,” Jennings said. “We have to win. I’m going to do my part and I’m going to try and make sure the team does their part.”

And he’s got people watching out for him.

“The great thing is, I truly believe he’s not afraid, he’s not afraid for himself. He thinks he’s good enough and can do this and that’s most important,” said Hammond, the GM. “We’ll worry about him. He just goes out and performs.”

Ideal type of 2-guard?

What type of 2-guard do you feel best fits our style, and would make a good running mate with Jennings in the back court? Right now we have Redd (30 yrs old), but I'm not really sure that's he part of the future we are trying to build towards.

So my question is, what type of 2-guard would you prefer? Obviously Kobe and Wade would be great, but let's be realistic here. Do we want a high-scoring SG (20-30 ppg?) that needs the ball in their hands a lot, or somebody who can play off the ball a bit and notch somewhere between 16-20 ppg.

I feel Jennings has shown himself to be a good decision maker thus far. He knows when to score, and is capable (And will only improve), but at the same time, he's a willing passer. For this reason I would prefer Jennings have the ball in his hands most of the time. A player similar to Richard Hamilton (31 yrs old) would really flourish in our system because he's a solid shooter and plays very well off the ball. Of course Rip is getting up there in age, but I think a player with a similar game would be perfect for our team.

JA wants out

GERY WOELFEL

It's amazing how things sometimes work out in pro sports.

Remember when the Green Bay Packers incredibly saw quarterback Aaron Rodgers do a free fall on draft day when all the talk before the draft was how Rodgers would likely be one of the first players chosen?

The Milwaukee Bucks now seem to have been the beneficiaries of Lady Luck as well.

For starters, in the weeks leading up to the NBA trading deadline last February, the Bucks and Memphis Grizzlies had trade discussions. The Bucks coveted Mike Conley, a quality young point guard.

If the Bucks had been able to consummate that trade, Conley undoubtedly would have been their point guard of the future and there wouldn't have been any need for them to draft Jennings.

The Bucks also explored trading the 10th overall pick, the one they used to select Jennings, who last week scored a franchise rookie record 55 points against the Golden State Warriors.

The Bucks had talked to several teams, including the Washington Wizards. At the time, the Wizards had the fifth overall pick but were quite receptive to trading it.

The Bucks brass was hoping to secure Washington's pick and possibly draft sharp-shooting guard Stephen Curry. Instead, the Wizards dealt the pick to the Minnesota Timberwolves in a multi-player deal.

Before the draft, the Bucks also chatted with the Charlotte Bobcats. At least, that's what Terrence Williams told me Wednesday night.

Williams was the 11th overall selection, taken by New Jersey -- just one pick after the Bucks took Jennings.

According to Williams, he was told there was a strong chance he would be taken by the Bucks with the 10th pick and then traded to the Charlotte Bobcats.

Williams said he doesn't know why the trade didn't materialize and he didn't know who the Bucks would have gotten in return.

And, finally, there was yet another scenario in which Jennings almost didn't wind up being a Buck. Before the draft, he worked out with the Golden State Warriors.

According to some people who witnessed the workout, which also included highly-touted point guard Jonny Flynn, Jennings was sensational.

Based on conversations with Warriors officials, the Jennings' camp was led to believe Golden State was going to draft Jennings with the seventh overall pick.

But that didn't occur, I'm told, because Minnesota, which had the fifth and sixth picks, surprised the Warriors and most NBA officials by taking two true point guards: Ricky Rubio and Flynn.

Suddenly, Curry, who put on a stunning shooting display at the pre-draft camp in Chicago a few weeks earlier, was available for the Warriors, who quickly drafted him instead of Jennings.

With neither New York and Toronto -- the teams drafting immediately after the Warriors -- interested in drafting a point guard, Jennings fell to the Bucks.

Redd might come off the bench when he returns from injury

Skiles: (before the game)

"That's a possibility," Skiles said of Redd coming off the bench once he returns from injury.

"I don't know when Michael's coming back, so I'm not even thinking about anything until I get the word that he is coming back. We'll probably do a little more in practice tomorrow and then we'll see."

Redd out for this weekend's 2 games

After Bucks practice today, Michael Redd, who practiced, but not with contact, said:

"From what I've been told, we'd like to get some contact practices in before I play."

"It rules me out. We want to get some contact practices under my belt, and let me get hit a few times...then I'll be ready to play."

So he will be out for Friday's home game against Charlotte and Saturday at Memphis.

Jennings would be the 2nd pick if Draft held today

I give JH and Skiles a heck of a lot of credit. I'm all in- I think we got the next big thing in Jennings- this guy is the real deal. We have a Head Coach who is not going to settle for anything less then hard work on defense- HUGE improvement over Stotts, LK, and Kohl's other friends. Give Kohl some credit though, he FINALLY went outside of his friends network and got some guys who can get the job done.

Hammonds screwed up on White Lightning, but Prince was a hit, Jennings looks like one of the best hits in Bucks history, and Meeks is not too bad either. The Bucks rallied from an 18-point third quarter deficit but fell on a buzzer-beating shot in overtime by Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki.

"We could have stolen that game," Redd said. "We had a great opportunity to finish the game off.

Nowitzki’s game-winner sinks Bucks in OT

MILWAUKEE – Dirk Nowitzki ended the Milwaukee Bucks’ four-game winning streak and unbeaten mark at home all with one buzzer-beating shot.

Milwaukee forced overtime after trailing by 12 at halftime, but the
league’s 2007 Most Valuable Player and current Western Conference
player of the week connected on a fadeaway jumper over Luc Richard Mbah
a Moute as time expired, giving the Dallas Mavericks a 115-113 win over
the Bucks.

“We had our best defender on him,” coach Scott Skiles said of Mbah a
Moute matching up with Nowitzki on the final possession. “We know it’s
going to him. We know he’s going to shoot a step-back fadeaway, and
we’re going to have a hand up. He made a tough shot.”

Milwaukee struggled defensively for the second consecutive game,
allowing the Mavericks to score 66 points in the first half on 25 of 37
shots (67.6%).

When Dallas extended their 12-point halftime lead to 18 early in the
third quarter, Skiles quickly turned to his bench, taking out all five
starters less than three minutes in to the second half.

Over the next six minutes, the Bucks’ reserves cut the lead down to
11. When Brandon Jennings replaced Jodie Meeks, Milwaukee continued
their run and closed the gap to three entering the fourth quarter.

“That’s our second game in a row where we’ve had very little defensive
intensity, very little will to stop the other team at all,” Skiles
said. “We paid for it by getting way behind.

“Then we went to the bench, some guys came in with some energy, we
started scrapping around, playing a little bit, and gave ourselves a
chance.”
Luke Ridnour scored nine of his season-high 17 points in the third, all from three-point range.

With 1:57 left in the fourth quarter, Ersan Ilyasova connected on his
fourth 3-point shot of the night, giving the Bucks their first lead at
101-100 since being up 3-2 in the first minute of the game.

Milwaukee had an opportunity to win the game in regulation, and with a
timeout left, Skiles decided not to use it and let Jennings try and
make a play. The Bucks 20-year-old rookie had a shot, but missed,
sending the game into overtime.

“I was too busy looking for the contact,” Jennings said. “I had a good
look. I tried to kick my leg out a little bit and I shortened my shot
a little bit. If I would’ve just went straight forward or shot the
floater again, we probably wouldn’t have went into overtime. But this
is something to learn from.”

Jennings, who was named the Eastern Conference player of the week three
hours before the game, had another chance at making a game-winning shot
in overtime. With the shot clock running out, Jennings attempted a
well-contested fadeaway three-pointer that never reached the rim. The
Mavericks grabbed the rebound and called timeout with 3.5 seconds,
leading to Nowitzki’s game-winner.

“I’m kind of taking this one to heart because I feel that it’s my fault that we didn’t win that game,” Jennings said.

Coming off his record-breaking 55-point performance Saturday, Jennings
finished with 25 points, eight assists, seven rebounds, and only
committed two turnovers.

While Jennings may be trying to place the loss on his shoulders, Skiles
is more concerned with his team’s defense, which was ranked first in
the NBA before giving up a combined 240 points to Golden State and
Dallas.

“It’s something that happened to us on occasion last year, where we
cruise along, play really good defense for several games, and then we
come out and just give it all away,” Skiles said. “We’ll go back to
the drawing board tomorrow, start all over again, and see if we can’t
rebuild our defense.”

Skiles also wanted to see more from Andrew Bogut, who had 13 points and
six rebounds, and allowed Drew Gooden to score 22 points and grab 14
rebounds for the Mavericks.

“Bogues (Bogut) wasn’t near as active tonight as he has been,” Skiles
said. “A couple of those boards late in the game we just looked at, we
felt like he should’ve had. He just kind of got in some questionable
position, and got out-worked a little bit.

“But he’s been on a tear. He’s been playing well for us, so he just didn’t have a good game tonight.”

Bogut was equally critical of himself and his team for struggling defensively in their past two games.

“Defensively we weren’t very good all night,” Bogut said.
“Collectively as a team, me personally, we were pretty bad
defensively. Those Western Conference teams like to score the ball,
and I think we got caught in that trap a little bit.

“The bad thing is that we came out to an atrocious start. Starting
five was terrible. We came out with no energy. Everyone that came in
off the bench did a hell of a job getting us back in. So to even have
a chance to win, all the credit is to the guys that came off the bench.”

In addition to Ridnour’s 17 points, Ilyasova recorded his first
double-double of the year with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Mbah a Moute
also contributed 13 points and six rebounds off the bench.

Nowitzki finished with 32 points, seven of which came in overtime, and
11 rebounds. Jason Kidd finished one point shy of a triple-double,
scoring nine points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and handing out 17 assists.

Shawn Marion left the game in the second quarter with a left ankle
sprain and did not return. Erick Dampier missed his second consecutive
game due to illness.

ALSO CHECK OUT: Warriors offer high praise for Jennings (Stephen Curry and Stephen Jackson's reaction to Jennings' 55-point game) -- http://www.sportsbubbler.com/pro/bucks/70231047.html

Dallas Mavericks @ Milwaukee Bucks Game Thread

Figured I would get this started, if someone else has a tradition and wants to start it feel free to.

Any tv for the game tonight?
By Charles F. Gardner of the Journal Sentinel

Nov. 16, 2009 3:49 p.m.

Was there any doubt?

Bucks rookie point guard Brandon Jennings was named the Eastern Conference player of the week on Monday, for his dynamic performances in two games last week.

The 20-year-old Jennings scored 32 points in the Bucks' 108-102 victory over Denver on Wednesday, and he followed that performance with a 55-point outburst in Milwaukee's 129-125 decision over Golden State on Saturday.

In a few hours at the Bradley Center, Jennings and the Bucks will face the Western Conference player of the week, Dirk Nowitzki, and the Dallas Mavericks.

For the record, Jennings averaged 43.5 points, 7.0 assists and 4.5 rebounds in the two games, and he shot 60% from the field and 90% from three-point range.

Jennings fell just two points shy of matching the Bucks' single-game scoring record, established by Michael Redd when he finished with 57 points against the Utah Jazz on Nov. 11, 2006.

The Bucks rookie became the youngest player in league history to score 50 or more points, as he did at 20 years and 52 days old. LeBron James was 20 years and 80 days old when he accomplished the feat on March 20, 2005 for Cleveland.

Bucks Daily - Tuesday, November 17

Dirk Nowitzki hit a buzzer-beating game-winner to give the Mavericks the win, but not before an 18-point Bucks comeback to force overtime. Brandon Jennings finished with 25 points, 8 assists and seven rebounds and fellow point guard Luke Ridnour tallied a season-best 17 points off the bench. Ersan Ilyasova tied a season-high with 19 points in a reserve role, adding a team-leading 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the year. Jennings averaged 43.5 points, 7.0 assists and 4.5 rebounds in 39.5 minutes for the Bucks, who went 2-0 during the week. Jennings shot 60.4 percent from the field, 90.0 percent from three-point land and 87.5 percent from the charity stripe in those two games and set the Bucks rookie record for points in a game against the Warriors on November 14, eclipsing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's mark of 51 with a 55-point performance. Jennings became the youngest player in NBA history to score 50 or more points and tallied the highest total by a rookie since Earl Monroe scored 56 in 1968.
