Wave notes for the week of March 9th

Despite all the hoopla surrounding the Big Ten and Big East basketball tournaments, another championship run is heating up in Milwaukee, and Sunday is a big day.

Only six games remain in the season, and on March 15 at 2 p.m. the Wave (8-6) and Detroit (8-6) play in Milwaukee to determine who gets the league lead going into the final quarter of the season. It will be the best crowd of the season, as advance ticket sales are already ahead of the 4,700-plus that were present for Michael King’s jersey retirement on Feb. 15.

Notes for this week:

THE YOUNG GUARD: Everyone remembers Todd and Troy, Michael and Greg, but there is a great crop of young players — fast, skilled, enthusiastic — making its mark on the team this year. Rookies Marco Terminesi (28 points), Travis MacKenzie (20 points), Jacek Przednowek (17 points) and 21-year-old Chad Burt (11 points), along with second-year defender J.P. Rodrigues (20 points), are giving a new identity to the team.

THE NEW ERA: The recession has been tough on sports teams and leagues — Arena Football canceled 2009, the NBA is taking out loans, the NFL is cutting jobs. The Xtreme Soccer League did all their restructuring before the recession hit, and it has helped them avoid desperate measures during it. The Wave continue to draw solid crowds, webcasting has been a success and the league continues to lay the foundation for steady, focused, long-term growth.

KEITH’S MILESTONE: Coach Keith Tozer won the 600th regular season game of his 25-year indoor soccer coaching career back on Feb. 15. He is far and away the winningest coach in the history of this sport, and shows no signs of losing interest or slowing down. He’s having fun coaching a team with new players — guys who haven’t heard every story before.

I didnt even know there was a Wave board, and I have no clue on any of their players.

futsal vs MISL

I was reading a JSOnline article about teh future of MIOSL and Tozer said soemthing to the effect that he needs to teach MISL players to play Futsal...I generally know what Futsal is, but how is it different from MISL that the players need to learn a new game? Field size? # of players? what?

Anyone need tickets?

Sunday 3/16 Wave vs. Ironmen

Wow, what a game by the Wave. This was a solid game from all aspects. Offense, defense, restarts, goal keeping, you name it. Best game the Wave has played all year. Very nice to see Joe Hammes back in the lineup. 22-6 beating the Ironmen going away. NJ just beat Chicago on Saturday night 10-9. Tied with Detroit for first place with 2 games left against the Ignition. 1 home and 1 away. This should be a battle to the finish. Have to wait 2 weeks for the next home game. Can't believe the season is almost over. Championship game here in Milwaukee on April 26th. Really hoping that the Wave is in the finals. Go Wave.

Wow, we have this great spot to talk about Milwaukee Wave soccer and it is not being used. Quiet as a church mouse. There is a great deal to talk about. The Wave is once again gearing towards the playoffs. A Milwaukee Wave legend - Michael King has announced his retirement. Surprisingly enough not one bit of talk about that. Michael has given Milwaukee Wave fans an awful lot of excitement over the past 15 years. I do not know about anyone else but I find it ironic that both Michael and Bret announced their retirement within a few days of each other. Why do I say that? Both of them share a lot. Dedication and committment to not only the games that they both have a high passion for, but also to the teams and fans that have watched them for years. Our family has followed Wave soccer since the late 80's. Michael has been a joy and a wonder for us to watch all of these years. Michael is a warm, wonderful and caring individual. We have a very high regard for Michael. There is absolutely no question in my mind what Michael has brought to the game, the fans and the sport of indoor soccer. Much like Brett has brought to NFL football, the game itself, the Packers and the fans. Michael, we wish you well and many successes. Thank you for sharing your many talents with us. Good luck, my friend.

Welcome to the Sports Bubbler’s main Milwaukee Wave message board! Our goal is to provide the ultimate website for the Wisconsin Sports Fan. Feel free to look around, kick the tires and get a good feel for the site. If you see a discussion you want to jump in on, feel free to step up onto the soap box and add your two cents worth.

While we do want you to say what you want and have some fun, we do have a few guidelines….

Foul language, personal attacks, accusations, sexually explicit items or any other things that we feel cross the line of good taste will not be tolerated. If we do feel that you stepped over the line we will utilize the three strikes and your out policy, but keep in mind you can always fly out the first pitch.

Brewers sign Harley Wave of Kindness...

BRAUN, GALLARDO PUT NAMES ON WAVE OF KINDNESS HARLEYBrewers’ young stars join the ever-growing list of illustrious signatures

MILWAUKEE (Jan. 16, 2008) – In June, just his first full month in the Major Leagues, Ryan Braun crushed the ball and earned National League Rookie of the Month honors.

Just wait until the pitchers get to know him, the experts said.

Well, in July, Braun was the NL Rookie of the Month and NL Player of the Month, and pitchers still have no idea what to do with the 24-year-old Brewers star. He became National League Rookie of the Year – but he wasn’t the only Brewers newcomer to have a great first season.

Yovani Gallardo was 9-5 with a 3.67 ERA after his June callup from Triple A, and the 21-year-old is just one more reason Brewers fans can’t wait for Opening Day.

Braun and Gallardo both autographed the Milwaukee Wave of Kindness Harley-Davidson Sportster XL 883 on Wednesday, joining a list of names that includes Pele, Tom Crean, Bonnie Blair, Fuzzy Thurston and more.

All season long, fans can buy raffle tickets to win the bike that has been painted a special Milwaukee Wave blue and will be autographed by various celebrities throughout the winter. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and can be purchased online at www.milwaukeewave.com and at all Milwaukee Wave games.

The winning ticket will be drawn at the Major Indoor Soccer League championship game on April 26 at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Raffle proceeds will benefit Wave of Kindness, a nonprofit organization that brings soccer to inner-city youth through camp scholarships, game tickets, clinics and more.
