Anyone out there? Starting lineup was Jimmy Butler, Joe Fulce, Dwight Buycks, David Cubillan and Lazar Hayward.

Did not take long for Maymon to check in. Sloppy so far.Otule has a great putback then comes up short when uncontested next trip down.

Marquette can not continue like this - Buzz hates taking timeouts in the first half, took his earliest one ever tonight.

Sorry - late start with access problem. Anyone out there tonight?

Starting lineup was Butler, Fulce, Hayward, Buycks & Cubillan.

Butler was a force out of the gate.

First off bench were Acker, Otule and Maymon.

Recruiting - as the Tarik Black recruitment winds down, there my be one player visiting here unofficially tonight, Ayodeji Egeeymi, a 6'3 SG out of National Christian Academy in Maryland.

Nonconference Season Expectations

Now that the Packers are well on their way to flushing their season down the toilet, it's time to focus more on MU basketball.

This is going to be an interesting nonconference season and I think we have to see how it develops (both for MU and other conference teams) before forming any expectations for the Big East season. Here's what I'll be looking for:

The Bunnies: Centenary, Maryland Eastern Shore, Grambling, South Dakota, North Florida, Presbyterian. I don't see any teams in here that are even sleepers like Winthrop or ND State. But, MU is so inexperienced, that you can't rule out a game that ends up being a lot closer than we expect. A loss in any of them would be a really bad sign. Prediction: 6-0

Disney World: 1. Xavier 2. Michigan or Creighton. 3. Florida State, Alabama, Baylor, or Iona. This tournament will be a good measuring stick. A win over Xavier would be a pretty big upset, and a little too much to expect. After that, the rest of the likely opponents are good, but not great, teams except for Iona, which isn't very good. It would be nice to see MU win in the second round (probably against Creighton) and put up a good fight for third place. If they lose in the second round, they'll probably play Iona. Prediction: 1-2.

NC State and UWM: The first is an interesting matchup involving two teams that are both expected to finish near the bottom of their respective conferences. The second probably represents UWM's best chance ever to beat MU. Prediction: 2-0, but a loss in either wouldn't be a shock.

at Wisconsin: I have two specific predictions for this game. The first is that the young Marquette team will not have enough to win in Madison. The second is that, after two years of looking at this game as a meaningless exhibition, the Badger trolls will suddenly declare this to be a definitive statement of the relative merits of the schools' basketball programs.

If all this happens, and MU can avoid slipups in the home games, they will go into the conference season with a record of 9-3.

DJ Odom

As a season ticket holder I have modest expectations for this season given the youth of the squad. But I also had a feeling that the season would probably be a little better than what most are predicting, and that they might steal a game or two they have no business winning. I'd consider that a success as we await Codogaun's return next year and Vander Blue.

One thing has me worried about the season though. If Odom's foot injury lingers we've got real problems at the guard position. No depth, and you are going to see Cubillan and Acker on the floor together, maybe a lot. It also means we are going to bring forwards up to play guard.

If Odom is not available I see real depth problems that we saw last year when James went down. (Not that any of these guys are as good as him, but the situation is similar.) That is the scenario under which I see flashes of brillance from certain guys at certain stretches, but mostly losses to show for it.

Thoughts....?

Bracketology

You have to laugh at the notion of projecting the NCAA tournament field, seedings, and pairings before the season starts. But, for what it's worth (not much) Joe Lunardi's first "Bracketology" for the season lists MU as one of the "first four out" of the tournament field. He also has 8 Big East teams in the field. Lunardi must think a little more highly of MU than the Big East coaches.

NCAA Rules Youssoupha Mbao To Sit Two Games In 2009-10

Freshman Center To Make MU Debut At Old Spice Classic

Milwaukee – The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has ruled that Marquette freshman Youssoupha Mbao must sit out the team’s first two regular season games in 2009-10 due to a violation in NCAA amateurism rules prior to his arrival on campus.

Mbao, a native of Dakar, Senegal, played on a team (Dunas Hotels Gran Canaria) that had a professional player on its roster.

The 7-2 center will be eligible to participate in the team’s exhibition contest against MSOE, but will miss the first two contests of the season against Centenary and Maryland Eastern Shore. He will be able to make his MU debut when the squad hosts Grambling on Nov. 21.

Even though he has had some setbacks and it's not going to happen overnight, I love the way this guy gets into recruiting. His style of play and dedication to going after top recruits will make them a top 10 team (IMHO), but it will take three more years.

Vander Blue commits to Marquette

Here is my analysis on Blue from MU's Elite Camp

Vander Blue 6’4 PG, Madison, WI

I tend to be harder on local kids because I see them quite a bit against lesser competition. That being said, Vander Blue was the best player in camp hands down. Offensively – he shot well from 3pt range, drove to the hoop and finished. Has nice hops and was an effective passer when team had large lead. Defensively – can be a lock down defender – seemed to deflect with ease, often resulting in steals. Has the sense to help when teammates break down. Only player to give him trouble on the defensive end was Tokoto, but he was still more than effective against him. May have also had more rebounds than any other guard in camp. His defense and stamina put him at #1 for me. Only drawback was that he did not get teammates involved enough, but not sure his team would have won games if he had.

Marquette Madness Report

I attended the Marquette Madness event on Friday and, while it's impossible to learn much at those things, it is always fun to see the players on the court for the first time, especially the ones that are new to the program. A few comments:

1. By far the most positive part of the evening was seeing Joe Fulce perform with no sign of a limp and no real hesitation. I'm not a big fan of slam dunk competitions but it was great to see Fulce participate and turn in some good dunks. The entertainment highlight of the night was Maurice Acker tossing a pass from the promenade level and having Fulce take it on one hop and jam it through. There is a video of all of Fulce's dunks posted on You Tube, but you can't see where that pass came from. Fulce also seemed to be playing with confidence in the scrimmage. So, for the second year in a row I am hoping that Fulce can be a significant contributor to this year's team.

2. I liked Buycks athleticism; he had a nice dunk on his first attempt and also seemed to be playing with confidence.

3. Nobody really stood out in the scrimmage, which isn't unusual for something like that. But, Jimmy Butler looked a lot more confident (and a little more muscular) than he did at this time last year. Williams looked OK after struggling as the first participant in the dunk competition. He does have a pretty smooth looking shot. Maymon did some good work around the hoop and drew a few fouls. He also knocked down a 10 foot baseline jump shot, which is something MU hasn't had much of from its forwards the last few years.

4. Otule looked a little slimmer than I remember him from last year, and he looked decent, although some of that may have been because he was matched up with Mbao. Mbao is as skinny as I expected (Manute Bol comes to mind) and couldn't be much rawer. He had trouble completing even fairly simple dunks. I have some hope that Otule can contribute something this year, but really expect nothing from Mbao.

5. It will be nice having Acker and Cubillan around, especially with the lack of depth in the backcourt. I think Acker can be an asset playing 15-20 minutes a game; hopefully he won't be forced to go more like he was at the end of last season.

6. As expected, Johnson-Odom was unable to participate.

So, now I'll be looking forward to the exhibition game and the first nonconference games to see how the team shapes up and what the rotations are going to be. Hopefully we can also look forward to some good news relating to one or two of the high profile recruits who visited this weekend.

Big East Schedule Announced

Regardless of what your expectations are for this year's team, it's a pretty safe bet that MU won't be the last unbeaten team in conference play this year. Their conference opener is at West Virginia (one of the conference favorites this season) and 2 of the next 3 are the home and home with Villanova (probably the top favorite).

I also see that the home schedule ends with a bang, with games against Louisville and Notre Dame.

With Cadougan now out for the season on top of Johnson-Odoms' injury, it's looking like this is going to be a very long and difficult rebuilding year. I have been looking forward to seeing all of these new players in action, but the ranks are getting depleted pretty quickly.
