Kapler starting in center
By Tom Haudricourt
Thursday, Jun 19 2008, 10:10 AM
Gabe Kapler, who always seems to find a way to contribute, is starting in center today in place of Mike Cameron as the Brewers attempt to finish off an interleague sweep of Toronto at Miller Park.
Otherwise, the linup is the same as last night:
2B Craig Counsell SS J.J. Hardy LF Ryan Braun 1B Prince Fielder RF Corey Hart 3B Russell Branyan CF Gabe Kapler C Jason Kendall RHP Dave Bush
We expect the Brewers to make a player move before the game to activate reliever David Riske. We'll pass that along as soon as they make it.

Tavarez designed for assignment
By Tom Haudricourt

The Brewers made room on their roster today to activate reliever David Riske from the DL by designating reliever Julian Tavarez for assignment.
The Brewers signed Tavarez a few weeks ago to a minimum-salary contract after he was released by Boston but he did not impress club officials in his seven relief outings. Tavarez was 0-1 with a 8.59 ERA, allowing 13 hits, five walks and 10 runs (seven earned) in 7 1/3 innings.
The dumping of Tavarez shows that the Brewers have been impressed with the showing of rookie relieves Mark DiFelice and Tim Dillard.
Riske will be available to pitch in the game today against Toronto.

That sounds sexy -- the can't miss fashion accessory for the summer: Tavarez.

Bush - the Dr. Jeckal and Mr. Hyde of the Brewers. Who's it gonna be today?

Hold on, hold on -- someone read this for me -- is the BlueJays guy on Bugs and Cranks actually talking about the Brewers here?
Warning: Gregg Zaun bashing ahead
Yes, he hit a home run. Yes, he’s hit two since rejoining the team post-injury.
He also skipped a throw down to second trying to catch Mike Cameron stealing that landed four feet short and on the wrong side of the bag.
Then, on the best bunt I have seen in years - Kudos Ben Sheets - he rushed the play, not taking enough time to freeze the same Mike Cameron who had recently stolen second off of him before gunning the ball down to first to get Sheets.
Cameron charged home, beat the throw and in one sequence, Milwaukee showed how simple, fundamental baseball and good baserunning can win games, something Toronto has failed to grasp throughout the Ricciardi Era.
Well, it's a good thing the Brewers fired Yost when they did!

Well, any way you look at it, he's due.
I would love it if Bush pitched on days like this all season -- series already won, whatever happens, you've already won 2 of 3.
That's a great spot for a fifth starter.
A great day for spoiling a Bush start....and the Brewers bats can get to Burnett. He can be rattled pretty good on the mound.

Too bad Cameron isn't in the lineup today, he hits their pitcher fairly well. Plus he has shown that he is seeing the ball better. Maybe Fielder should sit this one out - just kidding!

Kapler getting consistant AB's makes me happy at the moment. He was hot at the plate, and now he hasn't played much. Cameron has a few dingers, but still isn't getting on base much to validate him playing so much. I think Kapler will get on base more, but hit a few less dingers in this time frame (Cameron will easily get him over the long haul).

I like Kapler, but I don't like the idea of sitting a guy that basically hit a bomb to win you a game the night before.
Mr. Semantic aka Pudge wants to go back to the future, he misses the old JSOnline ad nauseam.

Welcome to Gabe Kapler's season. He goes 7 for 13 and doesn't start the next game. He PH's and hits a HR the next game, but still doesn't start. Every game he's started for a long time he has gotten a hit. He's provided numerous pinch hits. The guy deserves to play right now.

Re: 6/19 Game Thread - Bush vs Burnett
I love that we can debate the merits of playing time for so many.
I've pretty much always loved the way Yost uses his bench and gets them PA.
Let's face it, if we're going to succeed in racing for that playoff spot, we're going to need every contribution we can get, and I absolutely think we need to have our bench ready to play.
Does anyone think it's a coincidence that Yost plays his bench so regularly that when injuries occur to guys like Rickie and J.J., Yost can get a guy like Counsell to step in and be ready for some quasi-regular playing time?
