8/20/08 Game Thread - Rodriguez vs. Parra - the rubber match

I will be out there w/ my son.  We are 4-1 watching Brewer games live together this year.  Here's to 5-1.

    Weeks in; Braun still out

Second baseman Rickie Weeks' sprained left thumb has healed enough for him to return to the Brewers' lineup today against Houston lefty Wandy Rodriguez. Leftfielder Ryan Braun remains sidelined, however, with his intercostal strain.

Mike Rivera also is getting a start behind the plate.

Here is the Brewers' lineup for their 1 p.m. game against Houston at Miller Park:

    2B Rickie Weeks
    SS J.J. Hardy
    LF Gabe Kapler
    1B Prince Fielder
    RF Corey Hart
    3B Bill Hall
    CF Mike Cameron
    C Mike Rivera
    LHP Manny Parra

Re: 8/20/08 Game Thread - Rodriguez vs. Parra - the rubber match

    Happy Birthday
Craig Counsell celebrates his 38th birthday tomorrow.....the team will enjoy an off day in recognition of this event.

    An Astronomical Feat
With a win today, the Brewers would clinch their second consecutive season series victory over Houston.....the team went 13-5 vs. Houston last season after 9 straight losing seasons to the Astros.

    For Starters
Brewers starters are 10-5 with a 2.74 ERA over the last 18 games (128ip, 39er) and have had 14 quality starts during this stretch.....Brewers starters have posted a 3.91 ERA for the season, which ranks fourth in the National League.

    Mikey Likes It

Mike Rivera has made only 13 starts this season (12g at C, 1g at 1B) but is batting .320 (16-for-50) with 12 RBI in those starts.....he has hit safely in 11 of his 13 starts this season.

And some reading material I posted in the Daily Drink

The Llama has a postgame locker room report. Bernie's Crew says Two out, Two Strikes Hurts Sheets. Right Field Bleachers interviews Jeff Cirillo. Is Ned Yost destroying another arm? Ned doesn't think so. Cute Sports is concerned about Ned's over use of CC. Michael Hunt says you should be concerned about Sheets, not CC. Sheets doesn't think he's pitching that bad. Should CC be considered for the NL Cy Young award? This guy says no, This guy says yes. This braves fan wants nothing to do with CC in the off season. Is Sabathia the greatest pitching acquisition ever? Fan Graph has the details. Rumors and Rants doesn't care for CC Sabathia and hopes his arm falls off. Wisconsin Sports Bar is not pleased with the money Jason Kendall will be making next year. I believe the Brewers pitchers would disagree with that. Bugs and Cranks weaves the Fonz into their game story. Tim Dillard is the SportsBubbler.com Brewers Prospect of the Week. We should see Tim back in Milwaukee on Sept. 1st. Brad Nelson should hopefully be joining the team too.

Some late ads - Bernie's Crew profiles Caleb Gindl. And Between the Green Pillars has 4 things to watch.

Wiggington seems like an odd choice to leadoff, no?

I would think he would be right behind Tejada and Berkman, the way he's been going.

This is exactly why I'd rather have Coop than Yost as a manager.

While Yost is toying with his paint by numbers "plug 'em in" line up catering to the needs to stupid spoiled hitters like Braun, Prince, and Hardy, Coop is out there trying to make things happen.

    Bless his soul.

Agreed, it makes no sense at all. Coop's got to be getting the Nedly treatment on Astro boards.

Hey Einstein, did you get my text last night? I was worried you had fallen out of your chair and fainted into the loge level when you read it.

What do you think of Yost's new rest strategy, of pitching starters very deep into the game with high pitch counts, and then giving them an extra day of rest?

My personal favorite is that pitching deep into games is mental...and apparently so are pitch counts!

BTW, everyone should check out the Josh Kalk Player Card thread.

Coolest baseball reference site I've seen.

Even breaks down pitch-type usage by count (to batting side)!

Anyone that is confused as to why Yost has a job only needs to listen to interviews like that.

Dude is such a lovable baseball guy.
