Boras Claims that the contract that Alvarez signed was invalid...

I won't pretend to understand what is going on here but apparently Boras and Alvarez are not happy with contract "everyone" believed he signed over a week ago. Boras claims the contract was signed after the deadline and that Alvarez either is eligible for further negotiation or that he is a free agent???? Again I really have to admit this is one time I am having trouble following Boras' moves here. In short I think Baseball and Pittsburgh is about to have another giant Boras induced headache.

You have a link on this?

It's not that I don't believe you, but I and others I'm sure want to know more.

"Melvin may have gotten this franchise out of a hole, but it is painfully clear that this clown cannot build a playoff team. How many more years are you willing to let Melvin continue to trot a team that has no plate disipline, bad basrunning, bad late inning pitching, and contiually chokes when its on the line? Melvin has no clue when it comes to hitters and it shows. Melvin must go if this team is to ever makes the playoffs again.:"

Well, it's good to know the Players Association stands by Boras on this issue -- they really follow the $$$, don't they?

If prior to March 1, the Player and the Club have not agreed upon the terms of the contract, then on or before 10 days after said March 1, the Club shall have the right by written notice to the Player to renew this contract for the period of one year.

Here is the most important part of the article Ghostdog posted from the Pirates:

PITTSBURGH -- The summer-long drama surrounding Pedro Alvarez took another sudden twist Wednesday, as the Pirates revealed that the No. 2 overall selection in the June First-Year Player Draft is holding out from reporting to Pittsburgh until he can rework his signing bonus.

As a result, the Pirates have placed Alvarez on the restricted list.

Under Major League Baseball rules, any player that refuses to sign an agreed upon contract and report to an organization can be put on the restricted list. While a player is on the restricted list, he may not sign a contract with or play for another organization.

Great work on the part of the Pirates. A strong counter-move by them.

My original source was word to mouth, so it taking time for the story to filter through.

The two sides have been hand fighting for some time and Boras I don't think was ever happy about settling for 6M for Alveraz.

I don't think the Pirates had any choice they had to Restricted List to protect themselves. However, knowing Boras he has found something in the MLB contract or in the basic agreement that he is going to exploit.

I don't like his method of operation but he usually knows where he is going with these types of moves. You don't pull this over a 200K .

Peter Gammons has an interesting article on his ESPN blog. He  i think is the first baseball writer to really think outside the box on this.

     http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/print?id=3559033&type=blogEntry

What Boras is accusing the MLB office of doing is pretty serious...

His final verdict is that the June draft is broken. In many ways this could end up being the biggest "real" stain to Bud's legacy that has a huge impact on the future of the game.  PEDs were a minor blip that will be forgetten in 5 years.

This could again throw the competetive balance in baseball that the draft has started to allow, right out the window.

Yea this has been going on for a few days now, and some how it effects the royals top pick too.  All Boras wants is for his player to go into the free agent market and make the big boys have a bidding war over him.

There is a real danger that this strikes at the capricest nature of the slotting and there is some evidence that MLB has been sloppy with the enforcement of signing deadlines.

When this gets into the hands of an arbitrator who knows what type of precedence will be set.

You sound an awful lot like the owners on the eve of Andy Mescrscimdt's arby case 30 something years ago that lead to Free agency.

This has mess written all over it.

Deadline Mess Update — Hosmer Pulled

    Posted by Kevin Goldstein @ August 29, 2008, 06:41 PM-->

No. 3 overall pick Eric Hosmer has been pull out of today’s game with Idaho Falls of the Pioneer League.  This happened at the commissioner’s request, and is obviously related to the grievance filed by the union related to the Pedro Alvarez deal, and the Pirates‘ official response, which noted that Hosmer’s deal with the Royals came into the commissioner’s office even later than Alvarez’ did.

An ugly situation just got a whole lot uglier, and I bet we’re not even close to done yet.  Plenty of time between now and the hearing date of September 10.

Update: While the Royals have yet to comment, the commissioner’s office has, at least temporarily unapproved Hosmer’s contract, pending the September 10th hearing and the results within.  While this certainly makes sense given the facts, it still seems like MLB extending their middle finger to Boras, when in the end, if Boras wins, it just gives him one more client he could end up getting extra money for.  Just like the deadline extensions that were handed out, MLB fails to see the big picture at times, it seems.

Aside No. 1 – How mad you think the Royals are at the Pirates for dragging Hosmer’s name into this mess?

Selfish Aside No. 2 – I sure hope this gets figured out before I have to start team prospect lists.

I just assumed morbid obesity was a contributing factor, as well.

Yosty (YO-stee) n. A collection of games that the Brewers have lost , where you can look at a piece or pieces of management by Ned Yost and reasonably and logically conclude (based on conventional baseball wisdom and factual information available at the time) that he should have done something differently that could, along with other factors, possibly have changed the outcome of the game.

Boras is trying to profit off of a mere technicality. True money leaching scumbag. I guess he believes its worth straining relations with ballclub management to get the extra buck.

C.U.@summerfest. Geddy is a Brewer fan too.
