Now that we're all back off the ledge for a little bit...

here's what their current lead means.

If the Brewers go 10-10 in their last 20, it would get them to 92-70.

    • The Phillies would have to go 15-6 to tie.
    • The Cardinals would have to go 16-4 to tie.
    • The Astros would have to go 17-3 to tie.
    • The Marlins would have to go 20-0 to tie.  (Just for shits and giggles...)

Just a note about the Phillies, under this situation the Mets would also have to go 13-8 or better to cause the Phillies to fall to wild card status.  They have two more games to be played tomorrow, so there will be two more guaranteed losses between them one way or another to absorb.  As said in other threads, it would be REALLY nice for the Brewers to open up some more room between now and next weekend's four game set in Philly.  Still, all the Brewers need to do in that series is win two games to deem it very successful.  It will definitely be a playoff setting for sure.

  • These things are not unrealistic and very well could happen.  I really don't think 92 or 93 wins gets them in.  It might be, but the goal should be 95 wins (13-7 the rest of the way).  That puts them in the driver's seat the whole way without needing to look back.

Of course, IF is the operative word here. IF the Brewers offense and bullpen continue to perform the way they have the last week, and they continue to be cannon fodder for teams with a pulse (2-9 in their last 11 against playoff contenders) that 10-10 is going to be tough to reach, and winning even one game in Philly will be difficult. The last 3 games have shown that winning games against the bottom feeders isn't going to be a cakewalk either.

What the Brewers clearly need now is for one or more of their big hitters to go on a hot streak. All of the stats about on base percentages and everything else can be tossed out the window now. SOMEBODY has to step up and start delivering some big hits to drive in some runs. In their last 6 games the Brewers have scored 15 runs and have had exactly ONE multiple run inning, and the key hit in that inning came from a pitcher. That is simply not going to cut it. Unfortunately, the history of this team has been for the offense to go into these funks when the pressure is on. If that continues, the next 3 weeks are going to be tough to take.
