    Arbitration Numbers

We have several prominent players up for arbitration next year, and I was wondering what a good projected dollar amount.  I based this mainly on year in arby and what I can recall other similar players getting.  If anyone disagrees or wants to say something similar, go right ahead.

    Dave Bush $4 million

Chris Capuano DFA, but I hope we find some way to sign him to a dirt cheap contract and see if he can be ready for 10.

    Fielder $8 million

    Hardy $4 million

    Hart $3.5 million

    McClung $3 million

    Weeks $3 million

All are first timers except for Hardy (2nd), Bush (2nd), and Capuano (3rd)

    Members include:
    Prince Fielder
    Bill Hall
    Eric Gagne
    David Riske

I get the feeling that you are the low side of these guys.

I know everyone here thinks that they suck, but they are all All-Stars.

Mostly, I think it depends on the offers though.  For example, if they offer Hardy 4M and he wants 5M, I think he'll get 5M.

I think we have to wait and see what the two sides want before we know anything.

While I certainly could be low, I think it is important to note that these guys, sans Hardy, are first year guys.  IIRC, Howard with an NL MVP under his belt, got 10 million as the highest paid 1st year arby.  Hart has been about an above league average RF, and Hardy got a similar amount after being an All-Star.  I have no clue on Weeks as I don't see a precedent because of the uniqueness of his contract.  Radio, this sounds like a job for you, combining the arbitration numbers of similar players over the last couple of years.

I don't think Fielder will get 8.  I'd say 7 or lower.  He regressed this year and Howard got 10 after 50 Home Runs and an MVP.  Hardy will probably get a little more than 4 though, likewise with Hart.  Rickie shouldn't even try to get more than he's making now.

Sorry man, just not going to happen.  Fielder was 3rd in the MVP voting last year and hit 50 HRs.  His "regression" still left him as one of the best hitters in the NL.  The only way he gets 7 is if he asks for 11+, which I doubt Boras is dumb enough to do.

There really aren't a lot of guys that we can compare to Hardy I don't think, not that many guys end up going to arbitration anyway.  My guess is that they will resign Hardy/Hart for 4-5 and Boras will force Fielder to leave it up to the arbiter.

    Re: Arbitration Numbers

I think everything is pretty close....

....the Crew had better offer Prince $8.5 million, because after Morneau worked the market between $4 and $5 million, and the Phillies/Howard inflated the minimum to $7 million-$10 million, the arbitration market for 1B is clearly moving out of whack.

Fielder/Boras probably push that Howard victory with an $11 million request, and I cannot blame them one bit. They're walking in with 34 HR, 102 RBI, which will entice the arbitrator (it's not like they'll be arguing PMLV and VORP in those hearings), and don't scoff at the fact that Prince is walking in there with an AS bid, a 3rd place MVP vote, and I'm sure the words "youngest player to hit 50 HR" will be uttered...which neither Morneau nor Howard were able to argue.

Fielder has an exceptional body of work to build off of in an arby hearing, and frankly, he will be worth every cent he gets for the Brewers. Even $11 million is a bargain for him, and if you don't believe me, find a replacement 1B with his production level on the market, his production history, and let me know what the 6-7 year open market contract value needs to be...

How does one apply for the job of baseball arbiter?

I would love to do this.  But Frankly, Radio needs the job A LOT more than I do and would frankly probably be better (read: more informed) than I would.

Yosty (YO-stee) n. A collection of games that the Brewers have lost , where you can look at a piece or pieces of management by Ned Yost and reasonably and logically conclude (based on conventional baseball wisdom and factual information available at the time) that he should have done something differently that could, along with other factors, possibly have changed the outcome of the game.

I've been trying to figure this one out.

If you go to MLB.com sites, like the Brewers', there is a "Job Opportunities" link way at the bottom of each page. If you click on that, it will usually tell you that no jobs are currently available, but the Brewers will provide a service on their site where you can fill out an application just to receive every job opening.

So far I've received mostly franchise/team jobs, so I'm not sure how you find something like the MLB jobs.

    Re: Arbitration Numbers

I think the number for Hardy is a little low. He is a solid fielding SS w/above average range and 25HR power. I was thinking 5-6M for Hardy. Khalil Greene made 4.5M and (4.66 seasons) Jose Reyes 4.375M in 2008. I assume they both will get a small increase in 2009. Reyes is working off a 4 year extension he signed in 2006. Kahlil Greene is working off two year deal he signed before 2008 to avoid arbitration for 11M for 2 years. I think those two deals will help set the price for Hardy's arbitration number.

I'm waiting for the Cubs and White Sox jobs to open up.

The Atlanta Braves jobs are fully listed, as are a few other franchises.

It's an awesome service, you'll get 2-3 email updates a week.

Now's the time to start working in MLB if you don't have any baseball playing experience, they're finally running organizations like businesses and rewarding innovative people with jobs. Hell, the Texas Rangers' GM did something like own a donut shop, apply for an MLB internship, impressed somebody and ended up with a string of front office jobs.

All I ask is that if you are the next Jon Daniels, you give me a job as a regional scout :) I'll do it for rent, beer, and food money.

    Re: Arbitration Numbers

Ike, where did you find that specific list on Cot's?

Did you dig through the full arby listings, or do they actually list winners and losers somewhere?

BTW, thanks for the kind words. If I ever get an MLB front office job, I have the feeling that I'd have to hire approximately 30 special advisors with internet handles.
