    I've had it with "basically"

     The score for today's game:

     McCarren = 1

    Larravee    = 1

     Please join my campaign to eliminate the tedious use of the word 'basically.'

     Here is the reasoning::

     The word "basically" is an overused verbal tic which demeans and condescends to the listener.

      It is at the same time a way for the speaker to inflate his own self esteem by flogging and repeating

    words that appear to emphasize personal knowledge.

      It is a fault which has become, I fear, some sort of custom or accepted

    colloquialism.

    One each for the announcers is an improvement.  The goal is Zero.

     cheers

    This is basically a stupid and useless post.

     Okay...I just thought "basically" was a lazy word routinely used in conversation. You're right, they'd do better without it. Funny thing though, if you're listening intently to what they're talking about you aren't noticing how many times they use the word "basically."

    Y'know, hopefully these kinds of temporizing devices won't be around for long in any way, shape, or form. Other things being equal, and if everybody gives 110%.

    Basically this is a physical and metaphysical impossibility.

    I've taken my campaign to Wisconsin Public Radio and anywhere else I communicate.

    As to concentrating and not hearing the 'lazy words' I find it's just the opposite.  I hear it and it's like being tased.

    Basically has been on a compilation of banished words for years at:

     http://www.lssu.edu/banished/

    Take a look and see how many of those words you use.

     My suggested additions for 2008 are "folks" and "essentially".  Essentially is the new basically.

     And the phrase "B" is the new "A" is also banished.

     We can along without people saying basically to no purpose.

    On rare occassion I have had to catch myself from saying it and say 'put simply' instead.

    My favorite solecism along these lines is this one I read many years ago:

    The Packers literally exploded in the fourth quarter.

    O the humanity.

    I remember that game...

    I think Lindy Infante was the coach at the time.

     Well, spread the word.  Or I should say *don't* spread the word.

    You don't have to go back all that far-- every game day they have that squib from Larry saying

    "And the crowd has erupted."

    As long as I understand the meaning or context, I dont care what verbage they use.  Basically, isnt that the purpose of communication

    To be proven wrong should be celebrated for it is elevating someone to a new level of understanding and awareness
