OT: Rugby: US v. Canada on Our Day - World Cup Qualifier
In California, ESPN has US v. Canada World Cup Qualifier on the tube at 1:00pm California Time on July 4, 2009.
Rumor has it that he who shall not be spoken of will not be mentioned. If you're looking for something favre from the ordinary with just a smidgen of violence, and are looking for something to do while holding a brewski, grilling hunks of meat or generally lost waiting for the fireworks, tune into ESPN at 1:00pm California time and cheer on the Eagles to pound those curling lovin' bastards from the Great White North. The Eagles will be the underdog in this match.
It's not enough that they spell "A" - "Eh," those queen curtseying subjects are attacking us on our day. 234 years ago we stomped their King. I say we sack the Queen this year. As if their spelling and Monarch behind kissing wasn't bad enough, they are probably responsible for the salad, soccer and light beer infection.
If you're in Charleston, SC, I believe you can still get tickets. The match is at Blackbaud Stadium.

Re: OT: Rugby: US v. Canada on Our Day - World Cup Qualifier
I'm still a little pissed about the subterfuge used in tricking holiday visitors to their country. Anyone heard of Boxing Day?
I spent a Christmas holiday in Canada and was rather stoked to partake in what I mistakenly believed was a day set aside for honoring the the Sweet Science. Yea, right. I woke up that December 26th and walked right up and punched my cousin in his fat Canadian head and he was like, "WTF?". He won't speak to me, even to this day.
And what is the deal with the Loonie? Endzones that are 20 yards long?
I'll be watching kegman, oh you can bet I'll be watching.

Reg, I'm thinking your cousin should be imported to the United States. Although, I have a fondness for disliking those from the Great White North, your cousin seems to have been infected with AmericanPoliticallyCorrectWimpinessitus. He should be sent to an Ivy League College and forced to live in a coffee shop for the rest of his years drinking non-fat decaf lattes at 107 degrees fahrenheit.
If you are referring to 20 yard long endzones in Rugby, it's because crossing the try line (goal line) doesn't count as a score. A player must "touch" the ball down under control to score a try (touchdown). If an opponent gets their hands under the ball as it is being touched down, it is not a try. If an opponent picks you up and carries you out of the endzone before you have touched the ball down, you have not scored. Also if a defender fields the ball in their own endzone they may have to run it out or get space to kick it out. Play often continues inside the endzone and the extra space is needing for maneuvering.
If you are asking about the 20 yard endzones in Candadian football, well that's anybody's guess.
I say we took their Cup. Now we take their balls - rugby balls that is.

I refer to the CFL endzones. Blasphemers.
In defense of my cousins, all are Packer fans and have made the trip down to see a game at Lambeau. Some have made multiple trips and enjoyed a Door County fall vacation to boot. They're not all bad.
Still tough to talk Cup but I'll gladly kick the Canadian known as Sid the Kid square in the balls.

I believe that the CFL still has their goal posts on the goal line. Aren't their endzone fifteen yards deep?
As my Grand-daddy once said, "Don't get into a spray fight with a skunk." Except he didn't exactly use the word "spray."

I'll double check with my canuck cousin but I believe you are correct on the first and I am correct on the second CCF.

No need, Reg. I double checked and you're right about the twenty yard thing. Shows how much CFL ball I've watched in my life time. The CFL: Where NFL import careers go on life support.

Though I'm a far cry from a CFL historian, a family tie to the game played in the Great White North kept me mildly interested over the years. My uncle, John Rechner, played RB for the Toronto Argonauts from 62-64. A graduate of Waukesha's very own Carroll College.

So your uncle was an "import," eh? Seriously, Reg, ask your uncle if he remembers a DT by the name of Ken Beck. He played with the Packers in '59-'60, and was expansioned to Minny where he was released on the final cut downs. He was picked up by the Argos for a few games in '61 and played the whole '62 season with them.

Yea, he was an import. I will ask him about Ken Beck.

Thanks, Reg. Now, I think I've located an Argo team picture from '62, and if so, your uncle should be on it. It's located on the Minden (LA) Memories website, and is on the Kenneth Beck tribute page, about 1/3 of the way down. You'll have to tell me which one is your uncle.

Re: OT: Rugby: US v. Canada on Our Day - World Cup Qualifier
I've got a call into my Uncle. I've been looking at the pic and I can't find him. He was #34 and I don't see him on that picture. I've tried to find another picture of the team from that period and haven't been able to, at this point.
Question for you CCF, was Beck one of the "Junction Boys" for Bear Bryant?

Beck would have missed that by two seasons. His first year at A &M was '55, and even the freshman players that Junction year--'54--John David Crow, Charlie Krueger--would not have gone to Junction. Jack Pardee and Gene Stallings were Junction vets, though.

I know it's the off-season and I know this board suffers still from Troll Overload, but this thread was unexpected. Glad to see, at least, your senses of humor are still intact.

Great to see you back in these environs Muddy! It has been awhile, no?
