Crew @ Cubs Game 2 Gamethread: July 3

    Kendall leading off

    July 3, 2009 10:57 a.m.

Chicago - Jason Kendall is back in the leadoff spot against Carlos Zambrano today. Luckily for the Brewers, Kendall has been just hot enough to warrant this, but with Craig Counsell in the lineup, I'm not sure why Macha felt he ought to do this.

    So, we'll ask...

    BREWERS
    C Jason Kendall
    2B Craig Counsell
    LF Ryan Braun
    1B Prince Fielder
    3B Casey McGehee
    CF Mike Cameron
    RF Corey Hart
    SS JJ Hardy
    P Jeff Suppan

Why Macha????   Hopefully he'll end up looking like a genius batting Kendall leadoff... but why?

Because he's hitting .375/.474/.375/.849 in the last week and .286/.375/.300/.675 in the last month. Those aren't outstanding numbers, because the power is so crappy, he's getting one base A LOT, so there is some sense in having him leadoff.

Kendall is getting on base nearly half the time he comes to the plate this week.

Man, I really just can't even stand looking at Zambrano.

Baseball is a game of the long season, of relentless and gradual averaging-out. Irrelevance—since the reference point of most individual games is remote and statistical—always threatens its interest, which can be maintained not by the occasional heroics that sportswriters feed upon but by players who always care; who care, that is to say, about themselves and their art. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, he is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

The problem with Kendall is he has no speed... I like Hart in that spot if not Counsell

No matter who is in there, we have to find a way to throw the ball better for us to have success. I think when you are constantly behind in games, it is not easy and it is not fun. Their starting pitcher was clearly better than ours this series.

Just hope we get the Jeff Suppan who shut down the Cardinals today. He hasn't pitch well against the Cubs.

Counsell has no more speed than Kendall.

    Less probably.

Speed is WAY overrated in a leadoff hitter, especially with the power this team has.

By the way, people can vote on whether they think Dodger Fans should boo MannyB when he returns to the line-up today.

They also make the comment that, "Unfortunately for Manny fans in LA, unless you're willing to travel to San Diego, New York or Milwaukee (is any player worth going to Milwaukee for?), you'll have to wait until after the All-Star break to see him play in person."

That little gem should get folks in Milwaukee all fired up.

I would argue that Counsell is faster than Kendall.  I don't know why you're so tied to this idea that Jason Kendall is fast.  He may be fast by comparison to other pitchers, but he far from fast.

Speed may be overrated, but I'd rather a guy have more tools.
