This Date in Packers History
August 8:
A raft of preseason games for this date, and among the notables.
August 8, 1970 Falling behind 31-10, the Packers snap out of their lethargy to force a 31-31 tie at the game's end. The lethargy was explainable: pre-game prayers were said for the terminally ill former HC, Vince Lombardi, before the Bishop's Charity Game.
August 8, 1981: Determined to keep a 21-0 lead and build some confidence for a squad that went 5-10-1 the season before, HC Bart Starr keeps his starters into the fourth quarter as they hang on to a 21-17 win in Dallas.
August 8. 1992: BLF throws a fourth-quarter TD pass to give the Packers 14-10 lead enroute to a 21-13 victory over KC.

Re: This Date in Packers History
Good thread, CCF. Needs some controversy, though. Hmmm...what was Dan Devine's dog up to on this date?

It depends on the year. Before: chasing around the neighbors' fowl. After: Pushing up daisies.

August 9:
August 9, 1975: The "Bart Starr Era" kicks off in Green Bay as the Packers knock off the Bills, 23-6, in preseason action. The Packers get a PR TD out of rookie Willard Harrell and shut down OJ Simpson. The win puts the Packers on the SI cover, thereby jinxing the rest of the '75 season.
August 9, 1986: The Packers beat the Jets, 38-14 in the first exhibition game played in Camp Randall.

Made it to that game. Remember nothing about the game. Do recall sitting on the end seat near an exit. Soda vendor's steel rack kept scraping across my ribs. Probably still have rib grooves as a souvenir.

LOL, That was my first trip to Lambeau. I was staying with my grandparents in Sturgeon Bay that summer and I remember coming home after the game and one of the local stations had produced a highlight package of Willard's impressive debut set to the tune "The Hustle".
Dig that one up on limewire kiddies! Van McCoy and the Soul City Symphony is the ticket.
This is going to be a tremendous thread CCF.

Ah, yes, Reg, you would have to bring up '75 and memories of my mis-spent youth. Do I remember Van McCoy? You betcha. "The hustle" and "The Bump," and KC and the Sunshine Band. I was a dancing fool in those days.

August 10:
August 10,1968: Even though it was just an exhibition game, I usually signpost this game as evidence of the decline that came afterwards. The Packers lost, 15-14, to the Giants in the Bishop's Charity Game. Usually, prior to that game, the Packers would have little trouble with the Giants in preseaon. Unfortunately, the Packers would have problems with quite a few more teams in '68...

August 11:
August 11, 1984: The Packers and the Bears square off for the last time in preseason, and the Packers win, 17-10. Usually, the Bears were a regular fixture in the preseason schedule, but a well-publicized shouting match between Forrest Gregg and Mike Ditka on the sidelines (the game was played in County Stadium and both teams were on the same side of the field) right before the end of the first half, may have lead to the discontinuation of the preseaon tradition. There would be no love loss between these two coaches for the duration of Gregg's time in Green Bay.

I am very, very disapointed in you, CCF. How can you miss the big one that happened on August 11?
And my 10-month old has this to say about the game:

My bad! The Packers franchise was officially born on this date in 1919. Even I wasn't alive for that one...

Re: This Date in Packers History
August 12
August 12, 1967: In a preseaon tilt against the Steelers (which the Packers won, 31-20), Bart Starr does a very rare thing: he raises his voice in the huddle. After T Steve Wright lets Steelers DE Lloyd Voss in for a sack, Starr sharply rebukes Wright and says to him that if he sees Voss in the backfield one more time, "I will kick you in the can in front of 50,000 people." I knew there was a reason that Wright made my "Dishonorable Mention" list.
August 12, 1972: Yes, the Miami Dolphins were 16-0 in games that counted in the '72 season, but they did drop one to the Packers in the Orange Bowl in the pre-season that year, losing 14-13. The Dolphins had the opportunity to tie the contest late in the game, but the snap on the PAT was botched, giving the Packers a win.
