Ah, a guy hits a couple HR in a World Series game and the platitudes come flowing from McCarver's mouth like someone turned on a faucet.

Can I just say that that Rollins play was one of the smartest dekes I've ever seen by a shortstop? Really well played, resulted in an out. Perfect example of hidden range. Intelligence can be a great attribute for a fielder.

You can say it, but it will just be dismissed as more of your liberal clap-trap.

(Loved the way Lee just nonchalanted that one.)

Nice to hear McCarver and Buck send condolances to Marvin Miller on losing his wife and take the stand that he should be in the HOF.

I can get with the condolences, but Miller doesn't belong in the HoF in my judgment. It think it should be mainly a place for on-field actors (players and, to a lesser extent, managers). I suppose some front office types (Branch Rickey) make sense, but I think those should be rare.

The writers and broadcasters get their own wing, so if there is a Labor Relations wing, then Miller and Fehr probably belong.

Ever read Miller's letter on why he doesn't want to be in the HOF? The man is an incredible writer and debater (his autobio is phenomenal).

If commissioners get in, then guys in Miller's position should be able to get in too, right?

I am not sure commissioners should be in. Off the top of my head, I can't think of one that deserves enshrinement.

Happy Chandler, the guy who got out of Branch Rickey's way on integration after Landis stood in the way for years?

Opening the game to black players was huge, but if his greatest contribution to the game was the passive act of "getting out of the way" then I would suggest this single "action" falls short of what I think the HoF should be about.

I understand what you're saying, but someone had to take the initiative to do it, and the move wasn't going to be greeted with a shrug by the general public.

Are there any commissioners that were really any good, or are they all just money grubbers who, at best, just happened to let a social revolution happen on their watch?

Baseball is a game of the long season, of relentless and gradual averaging-out. Irrelevance—since the reference point of most individual games is remote and statistical—always threatens its interest, which can be maintained not by the occasional heroics that sportswriters feed upon but by players who always care; who care, that is to say, about themselves and their art. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, he is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

This one wasn't bad. He may have been a little hard on the Shoeless, but he carved out a role for the commissioner to act in the best interests of the game independent of the owners that it took Bud and the boys about 75 years to undo.

Was segregation in the best interest of the game?
