    Misleading Stats?

I apologize if this has already been posted. For some reason it might have been.

I am a big stats guy, and I don't know if I can remember a season where stats have been either misleading, or mind-bogglingly weird (I think I just made a new word).

Offense has given up an alarming number of sacks, # 1 in the league.

Despite that, Rodgers is leading the league in passer rating. Unheard of for someone under that much pressure.

And the offense is #9 in the league based on yardage, #8 based on points per game.

Tied for #1 in TO ratio at +12.

Defense is rated #9 in points allowed. #4 in yards per game.

#9 in rushing yards per game, #3 in yards per carry

#7 in QB passer rating, #4 in INT's.

According to USAToday, their strength of schedule is ranked #24 in the league, so that is the first thing you would look at. But other than that, the stats just don't smell right.

And my 10-month old has this to say about the game:

Agreed.  Two things I can think of:

    1.  The chasm between the likes of Minny/Cin v. STL/Det/Cle is so large that it's hard to get a good read on what these stats mean.  Numbers aside, where does this team really stand?

    2.  They've put up big numbers on Minny after falling way behind twice, which also may mislead those stats a bit.

    1. We won't know until the Dallas game.

Agreed on #2, but then you have to compare how all the other teams acquired their stats. Can't compare teams based on two sets of standards. Not saying it isn't misleading, but hard to say.

Answer to point 1, the next few weeks with another cupcake and two decent teams will answer a lot of that. Though Minnesota played all three of the patsies we did and didn't do nearly as well offensively or defensively as Green Bay.

If it's 1 win with lots of yards and 2 low productions losses  the next 3 weeks then I'd say that probably we aren't who we thought we were (from the coaches perspective). If it ends up being 2-1 with a lot of yards in all 3 games, then it will have to be looked at differently.

Point 2 doesn't really skew that stats that much. NFL rankings are "per game". The Detroit game was opposite Minnesota tons of yards and points in the first half, no production in the 2nd, but it all averages out.

This year kind of reminds me of the Air Coryell years in San Diego. They were always league leaders in offense, but the defense could never get the one big stop to put them over the top.

    Good counter, fellas.

I think you're both right, the next few games against solid, but 2nd-tier competition will tell the real story on whether this team is decent or just great at accumulating numbers.

Or,  how bout....  the defense would ALWAYS  make the big stop ,  but some thug - bone-head  would go Mixed-Martial on somebody's Skull

That's because you dont lose rating points when you take a sack. Erin takes sacks all the time just to keep his qb rating high. No wonder some scouts call Erin "stat-boy," a la "Jeff Garcia."

You think Brett Favre gives a rat about his rating when he throws the ball away?

Look.. Rodgers has been a statistical dream this year against an overall easy schedule.

learning to make things happen out of not much to nothing will come with more reps or it wont. only time will tell.

that being said, many here were saying that we would be 6-1 right now, no problem.

Ill say it a thousand times until it happens.. until we beat a team that over matches us in many areas (and we have plenty to round out the year) we will continue to be mediocre.

sad thing is, we have most the talent.

we get out coached offensively nearly every game.

    Re: Misleading Stats?

Here’s the most alarming stat: we are 4-3 and playing second fiddle to the Vikings in the NFC North.

We have played the sort of football that makes most fans cringe and go to the kitchen to get another beer when we have the ball. We are not crisp, decisive or focused and don’t instill confidence.

The play of this years team is not less filling and does not taste great, despite the great "calorie" count of our QB.

But we are still in it, and I look forward to the rematch with the Vikings in the playoffs (V-Day).
