    Catcher Options (Lucroy the starter?)

I think we're all hoping that Jon Lucroy will be ready mid year to step up and be at least a part time catcher.

But the team is going to need someone to open the year, and Ramon Hernandez option was just declined by the Reds.

He's not great, but he's an upgrade and would be a good vet to have around.

You think he would sign for one year, 3.5 million?

EDIT: I just changed the title of the post so that we could talk about the point that Melvin just made according to Guru....

Yeah I think that's actually a pretty reasonable idea.  What do you know about the guy that his numbers can't tell us?

    Not much, unfortuantely.

Not sure how his D is these days, or if he's the kinda guy you want working with a young catcher on improving his game. Those would be interesting to know.

Melvin just said that Lucroy is going to get a shot to open with the team.

I was just reading a scouting report on him on ESPN and it said that his defense and game calling ability are improving.  His arm isn't great, but he's quick behind the plate which allows him to throw out a good percentage of runners.  He seems to handle pitchers well, but he needs work blocking the plate.

Baseball is a game of the long season, of relentless and gradual averaging-out. Irrelevance—since the reference point of most individual games is remote and statistical—always threatens its interest, which can be maintained not by the occasional heroics that sportswriters feed upon but by players who always care; who care, that is to say, about themselves and their art. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, he is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

    Oh my.

So then this is out, but they'll still need to find a backup type, right?

Would they really go into camp with the plan of Lucroy sinking or swiming and the second option being Rivera?

I sure as sh*t hope not.

I wonder what ever happened to the brewers rushing Salome to the team? I know the team has concerns about his D, but is it really that bad?? His offense was significantly better compared to Lucroy in AA, and even though he started off slow he hit almost .300 in AAA.

Wow. I'm not sure how I feel about Lucroy calling games especially with our rotation...as it is now.

I have more faith in Lucroy's offensive game translating to MLB than I do Salome and his "swing at everything" plan.

+1, though he's gotten good reviews for that aspect of his game in scouting reports so there is hope.

While there is hope, it just makes me nervous throwing out well-below average rotation into the hands of a rookie C with no solid plan B to back him up and start if he falters. Kendall is not an option IMO. I took a look at the FA C and I believe you got the right guy Einey. The other options:

    Josh Bard      BOS
    Henry Blanco      SD
    Ramon Castro CWS
    Ramon Hernandez   CIN
     : 1 year 1M - Padres
    Jason Kendall      MIL
    Jason LaRue      STL
    Benji Molina SF : 1 year - 4M - Indians
Jose Molina   NYY: 1 year- 400K- Cardinals
    Miguel Olivo   KC : 1 year - 400K - Indians
    Mike Redmond    MIN
    Brian Schneider
      NYM
    Yorvit Torrealba   COL : 1 year - 512K - Red Sox
    Jason Varitek   BOS : 1 year - 500K - Rockies
    Gregg Zaun   * TB

Unless they can get a deal Salome for a decent pitching prospect i think they should be patient with him, he can develop his D more with another year and can improve his Offensive approach as well. It never hurts to have alot of depth at a postition, the brewers have not had decent catchers comming up though the system in at least a decade.

I like him as a backup/ 1B option for Lucroy still.

    That would be my move.
