The Vince Workman reference makes my day.

Paul Caruth and I don't know, Gruber maybe?

I agree that there's a possibility of high reward, but that doesn't guarantee it. If Duchscherer or Pavano don't pan out which is a very distinct possibility, you essentially have the same exact rotation as last season.
Here's the some evidence that the reward won't reveal itself. Duchscherer hasn't pitched as a starter for a ...

That rotation means another .500 team the way I look at it. You need to make the up the offense with pitching that's well above average. Those acquisitions are not going to cut it.
I don't see the point of spending $2.5M on Saito either.

If Lucroy really struggles, Salome will be up in a heart beat because both have plenty of time. I just hate the rumors about Kendall coming back. Peterson and Rivera are good enough and Kendall's calling skills are diminishing.

The $4M gained by shedding JJ's contract covers Prince's raise. The remaining $10M and the $4.5M shed by leaving Kendall in the dust gives the Brewers some $12M to throw at a ...

I think the move opens the door of possibly acquiring John Lackey. He's going to demand a $12M minimum, which is a lot, but with Jeff Suppan's contract expiring after next season, there's still financial flexibility in 2011 especially if the Brewers find the playoffs in the process.
I can't wait to hear about Looper's option.

It didn't take long for Doug Melvin to start making moves. Just two days after the World Series finished, the Brewers GM started the off season by trading shortstop JJ Hardy for speedy center fielder, Carlos Gomez.
It's not the sexiest of trades and I'm sure fans are going to go after Melvin for not chasing down one of the Twins ...
